Washington County's earliest known inhabitants were pre-Columbian Mound Builders, who constructed effigy mounds in the area sometime between 650 CE and 1300 CE. The present-day city traces its origins to two communities that formed when the first White settlers arrived in the mid-1840s. The Wisconsin Territorial legislature created the Town of West Bend on January 20, 1846. In 1850, Washington County was bisected into eastern and western sections, creating Ozaukee County and Port Washington County. History
Northeastern Washington County's earliest known inhabitants were pre-Columbian Mound Builders, who constructed effigy mounds in the area sometime between 650 CE and 1300 CE. In the early 19th century when the first White settlers arrived in Southeastern Wisconsin, the Potawatomi and Menominee Indians inhabited the land now occupied by the City of West Bend. Several dozen mounds survive and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Washington County "Island" Effigy Mound District, which includes the Lizard Mound County Park site in nearby Farmington. In 1850, Washington County was bisected into northern and southern counties, with Port Washington and Cedarburg serving as the county seats. In 1853, Port Washington became the county seat of the new Ozaukee County, and West Bend became the new county seat. When Washington County officials from West Bend arrived to collect county records, they were run out of the county records because they were not relevant to the county. The county seat moved to Port Washington, and the town of Barton moved to West Bend in 1855. The city was named after the West Bend River, which is a tributary of the Milwaukee River. The present-day city traces its origins to two communities that formed in the mid-1840s: West Bend and the now-defunct Village of Barton. At the time, the town included land that is now part of the city of West bend, as well as the neighboring towns of Barton, Farmington, Kewaskum, and Trenton.
