Kneohe (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kaneohe]) is a census-designated place (CDP) included in the City and County of Honolulu and located in Hawaii state District of Koolaupoko on the island of Oahu. In the Hawaiian language, kneohe means "bamboo man" The population was 37,430 at the 2020 census. The commercial center of the town is spread mostly along Kamehameha Highway. Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden and the new Hawaii National Veterans Cemetery are also of note. The only commercial crop of any consequence in the area is banana. It was originally an agricultural area for the growing of taro and sweet potatoes. It is located at 21°2433N 157°4757W (21.409200, -157.799084). Nearby towns include Kailua to the east, reached either by Kneo he Bay Drive (State Rte 630) or Kame hameha. Highway (state Rte 83), the former also providing a connection to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and the latter connecting to Interstate H-3 and (at Castle Junction) Pali Junction. The total area is 22.5 square miles (22 km²), of which 6.6 square. miles (17 km²) is land and 1.9 square miles. (4.9 km 2) is water. The first three exits on the windward side of I-3 east (north) bound access Kneehe.

History

Kneohe was home to the early rulers of the Hawaiian Kingdom and consisted of 30 royal fishponds. It was originally an agricultural area for the growing of taro and sweet potatoes. It is now a popular tourist destination in Oahu, Hawaii, with a population of around 20,000. The area is also known as the birthplace of the first Hawaiian king, Kamehameha I. It has been the site of numerous archaeological discoveries, including the remains of the original Hawaiian king and his wife, Queen Liliuokalani, as well as some of the oldest buildings in the Hawaiian Islands. The town is located on the east coast of the island of Oahu and was once known as "Kaneohe" or "Keneohe", which means "the island of the fish" in Hawaiian. The word "kneo" means "fish pond" and means "a place where the fish live" in the language of the native Hawaiian people. It also means "to fish" and "keo" which means 'to fish' or "to catch fish, or to fish for food. Kneo' means "knee" and is the name of a type of fish that was used by the early Hawaiian rulers. The name of the town is still used today as a reference to the fish ponds in the area, and is also used to refer to the area as a place of origin for the Hawaiian name, "Kamehimehime".

Geography

Kneohe is located at 21°2433N 157°4757W (21.409200, -157.799084). Nearby towns include Kailua to the east, and Kamehameha Highway (State Rte. 83) to the north. The first three exits on the windward side of Interstate H-3 east (north) bound access Kaneohe. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.5 square miles (22 km²) of which 6.6 sq miles (17 km²), is land and 1.9sq miles (4.9km²) is water. The total area is 22.80% water, consisting of a portion of Kneo he Bay included in the census tract. Kneehe has a tropical steppe climate. It is located on the island of Oahu, the most populated island in the Hawaiian Islands. The island is home to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which is located in the town of Kaneohe, on Oahu's Big Island. The town has a population of about 2,000. It has a latitude and longitude of 21.4°N, and a height of 157.7°W. The area has a rainfall of 1.2 inches (5.4 m) per year. It also has a dry climate, with an average monthly rainfall of 0.7 inches (1.2 mm).

The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was3.48. The population density was 5,320.7 inhabitants per squaremile (2,054.3/ km²). The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there are 96.1 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there is 93.2 males. The city has a population density of 5,000 people per square kilometer (1,500 people/square mile) and a median age of 38.5 years.

Government and infrastructure

The Honolulu Police Department operates the Kaneohe Substation. The station is located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It is located at the base of a hill known as the "Kaneohe Lookout" The station was built in the early 1900s. It was the first police station in the Hawaiian Islands. It has been in operation since the early 1950s. The substation was built to house the Hawaii Police Department's Oahu Station. It opened in 1961. It's located on Oahu's north shore, near the shore of the Hawaiian island of Hanauma Bay. It closed in the 1980s after a fire destroyed the station's roof. It reopened in the mid-1990s and has been operational ever since. It serves as a base of operations for the Oahu Police Department and the Honolulu County Sheriff's Office. It also serves as the base for the Honolulu Fire Department's Kaneoge Substation, which is on the south side of the O'ahu Fault Line. The Kaneohee Substation was established in the 1970s and is located in the center of Kaneoheni. The O'Hare Police Department also operates a substation in the area, which serves as an entry point for the Hawaii National Guard. It began in the late 1980s and operates until the early 1990s, when it was decommissioned. It remains in operation to this day. It provides a police station for the city of Honolulu and its surrounding areas.

Elementary schools in Kaneohe CDP include Heeia, Kneohe, Kapunahala, Reverend Benjamin Parker, and Phala. James B. Castle High School is in the CDP. There is the Hakipuu Learning Center, a public charter school for grades 7 through 12. Hawaii Pacific University operates its Windward Hawaii Loa campus on Kamehameha Highway near Castle Junction.Windward Community College, part of the state college system, is located on the south side of central Kneehe. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu operates St. Ann Catholic School, K-8, in Heeian CDP but with a Kaneehe address. The Hawaii Department of Education operates the public schools. The private schools are Huakailani School for Girls (K-8), Koolau Baptist Academy, St Mark Lutheran School, and Windward Nazarene Academy. The state college is located in the town of Kneoehe, on the island of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. The town is home to the University of Hawaii at O'ahu, which has a campus in Kailua-Kona. The UH campus is on the north side of the town, near the village of Kailaua. The University of Honolulu also has a college campus in the city of O'oele, on O'Oleo, in Hawaii's Big Island. The campus is known as the "Hawaii University of the Pacific".
