Madera (Spanish for "Wood") is a city and county seat of Madera County, California. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 66,224. Madera is the principal city of the Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the Fresno-MaderA-Hanford Combined Statistical Area. The city is home to the MadERA Unified School District. The town was laid out by the California Lumber Company in 1876. The first post office at Madera opened in 1877. The most rainfall in one month was 7.11 inches (180.6 mm) in March 1991. The wettest year was 1983 with 22.13 inches (562.1 mm) and the driest was 2013 with 4.49 inches (114.0 mm) Although snowfall is rare, 4.0 inches (10 cm) fell in January 1962. The average annual rainfall is 11.87 inches (301.5mm) and there are an average of 59.3 days with measurable precipitation. The Fresno River, a tributary of the San Joaquin River, passes through the city north of downtown. Madera is located at 36°5741N 120°0339W. It is 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Fresno and 72 miles (116 km) southeast of Modesto. According to the United States Census Bureau, Madera has a total area of 16.5 square miles (43 km²), all of it recorded as land.

History

Madera is the primary city name, but also Berenda are acceptable city names or spellings. The town was laid out by the California Lumber Company in 1876. The first post office at Madera opened in 1877. Madera County officially became a county of the state of California on May 16, 1893. The town incorporated as the City of Madera on March 27, 1907. One of the city's first African Americans to hold an elected office was Rev. Naaman N. Haynes, who was voted in as a Madera Unified School District school board trustee in the 1960s. Landmarks include the historicMadera County Courthouse, the notable Madera water tower, and a fully operational drive-in movie theater. The city was named after the Spanish term for lumber. From 1876 to 1931, a 63-mile (101 km) water flume carried lumber from the mountains to Madera where the lumber was shipped by train. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River, which flows into the San Francisco Bay. It has a population of about 3,000 people, making it one of the smallest cities in California. It was once the largest city in the state, but is now a suburb of Los Angeles. It also has a number of landmarks, including the Madera Water Tower and the historic Madera Courthouse. In the 1990s, Madera was the site of a major earthquake that claimed the lives of three people, including a man who was killed by a falling tree in the town's downtown area. The earthquake also claimed the life of another man, who died in a car accident.

Via California Route 99, the city is 23 miles (37 km) northwest of Fresno and 72 miles (116 km) southeast of Modesto. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Madera has a total area of 16.5 square miles (43 km²), all of it recorded as land. The record high temperature was 116 °F (47 °C), recorded on July 13, 1961, and the record low temperature was 15 °f (9 °C) on January 10, 1949.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Madera had a population of 61,416. The racial makeup of the city was 48.2% White, 3.9% African American, 2.8% Native American, 1.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 38.0% from other races, and 5.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race accounted for 47,103 people (76.7%) of the population. There were 17,049 housing units at an average density of 1,079.8 per square mile (416.9/km²), of which 8,096 (50.8%) were owner-occupied, and 7,842 (49.2%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 3.5%; the rental vacancy rates was 5.1%. The median income for a household in the city in the 2010 U.S. Census was $31,033, and for a family of five or more it was $42,816. The average household size was 3,82, and the average family size was 4.09. The population was spread out with 21,338 people under the age of 18, 7,732 people (12.6%) aged 18 to 24, 17,287 people (28.1%) aged 25 to 44, 10,407 people (16.9%) aged 45 to 64, and 4,652 people (7.6) who were 65 years of age or older.

Government

Madera, California, is governed by a mayor elected at large, and six city council members elected by the people in their districts. In the California State Legislature, Madera is in the 12th Senate District, represented by Republican Shannon Grove, and in the 5th Assembly District. Madera, is in California's 16th congressional district, represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Democrat Jim Costa. It is the County seat of the County of Madera and is located in the Central Coast region of California. The city has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the city. The town is located on the San Joaquin River, which flows into the San Francisco Bay Area. It was founded in the 17th century by the Spanish settlers, and was named after the town's founder, Pedro de Madera. The current mayor was elected to his first term in office in 1998. He was re-elected in 2008, and is currently in his second term. The mayor is a Republican, as is the city's mayor, Frank Bigelow, a Democrat, and the city council member,  Shannon Grove, a Republican. In 2010, the city was the site of a deadly car crash that claimed the lives of six people. The death toll from the crash was at least six. The coroner's office has not yet determined a cause of death, but the death toll is expected to rise in the coming months.

Education

Madera Unified School District (K-12) is the largest school district in the city. The city has a reputation for good public libraries. The school district also has one of the largest private school enrollment rates in the state. The district has a history of high achievement and achievement in the arts and sciences. It also has a long history of low achievement and low achievement in many other areas of the city, such as poverty, crime, and health care. It is home to a number of colleges and universities, including San Joaquin Valley College Madera (for-profit) and Madera Community College. The town has a population of 1.2 million people, making it the second-largest city in the county. It has a high school graduation rate of 80 per cent, the third-highest rate in the U.S. behind San Francisco and Los Angeles. The county has a low poverty rate of 7.7 per cent and a high literacy rate of 8 per cent. The high school diploma rate is in the high teens for the first time in the town's history. The average high school student is now in his or her mid-twenties, with a grade point average of 9.8. The state has a higher-than-average graduation rate for high school students than any other city in California.

Transportation

Within the city, State Route 99 carries traffic in a generally northwest / southeast orientation. State Route 41 can be accessed via either eastbound county roads or via State Route 145, the latter of which turns from a northeastsouthwest bearing to a directly south orientation within the city. Madera residents can travel conveniently from neighborhoods to shopping centers, local schools, medical offices and work sites on the Madera Metro fixed-route transit services. There is a Greyhound bus station located downtown. The City of Madera provides local intracity public transportation services under theMadera Metro branding. The Madera County Connection, a county agency, provides intercity bus services to other communities inMadera County. A California High-Speed Rail stop is also planned. The city has a general aviation airport, Madera Municipal Airport, which is located on approximately 524 acres on the northwest edge of the city and is supervised by the city's Public Works Department. The nearby Yosemite International Airport, located in Fresno, is a private airport owned and operated by the City ofMadera. Just north of MadERA is the MadERA Amtrak station, which has a planned high-speed rail stop. A Madera High- speed rail stop has been planned for the future, but has not yet been approved by the California Department of Transportation. There are no plans to build a California High Speed Rail stop in Madera. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in or near the city center.
