York is a city in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. Founded around 1838 after the merging of two communities, Old Anvil and New York Station. At the 2010 census the population was 2,538, down from 2,854 in 2000. From 1920 to 1980, it was the largest town in the county. Since 1990, it has been the second largest city behind the county seat of Livingston.York is located at 32°2936N 88°1752W. The city was formally incorporated on April 6, 1881, after the merger of the two communities. It was named after a station on a stagecoach line. The rail came through in the 1850s and later, the "New" was dropped from York Station in 1861. The name was dropped and York was officially named after another community in Alabama, New York, in 1881. It is located on the Alabama Turnpike, which runs through the center of the city. The turnpike is one of the busiest roads in the state, running through the heart of the downtown area. It also runs along the Alabama-Mississippi state line, which also runs through York. The town is located near the junction of the Alabama and Mississippi rivers.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18 km²) of which 7.2 square miles is land and 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²), or 0.28% is water. The city is home to the New York State Psychiatric Center. The hospital was founded in 1903 and is the oldest psychiatric hospital in New York state. It was the first hospital in the state to open its doors to the public. It is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, which runs through the city. It has a population of 2,816. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, near the border with New York City and the state of New Jersey. The state's largest city, York, is located to the west. The population of the city is 2,716. It also has a small airport, located at the city's southern tip, at the junction of the rivers Yreka and Hiawatha. The age distribution was 30.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 17. 4% 65 or older. The median household income was $19,153 and the median family income was $23,417. The per capita income for the city was $13,577. About 41.5% of families and 42.7% of the population were below the poverty line. As of the 2020 U.S. Census there were 962 people, 474 families, and 2,414 people, residing in the City. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city, and runs into the Arkansas River. The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Little Mississippi River. It is the only river that flows through the city and flows into the Mississippi. The river is the main source of water for the town. The town's name is derived from the river's name, which means "waterway" or "ditch" in Spanish. It was also the name of the town's first post office, which was established in 1881. The current post office was founded in 1883 and is located in the same place as the city's original post office. The post office is located at 962 Main Street.

Culture

York is home to the Coleman Center for Arts and Culture. The center is known for its artist in residency program. In 2013, artist Matthew Mazzotta created Open House on a neglected property in the center of York. Open House appears as a small pink house that transforms into a 100-person open-air theatre for public venues. It is open to the public and available for rent.

Education

Sumter County School District operates public schools serving York. It was previously served by Sumter County High School in York until it merged into Sumter Central High in 2011. Sumter Academy, a private school, was in an unincorporated area near York. The private school closed in 2017. The district also operates York West End Junior High School and SumterCentral High School. The school district has two high schools in York: York Westend Junior High and Sumters Central High. It also has a middle school in York and an elementary school in the city. It has two elementary schools in the town of York and one in the village of Yorksville, about 20 miles from York.
