It is located 33 miles (53 km) north of downtown Phoenix, although the Phoenix city limits extend north to Cave Creek's southern border.
History
Cave Creek was settled in 1870 by soldiers on horseback from Fort McDowell. In 1873, prospectors from the Bradshaw Mountains found gold in the town. The town is named for the cave next to the creek the town was founded on. It is located on the banks of Cave Creek, a creek that runs through the center of the town, near the mouth of the Little Piney Creek River. It was named after the cave where the first settlers lived in the 1870s and early 1880s. It has a population of about 1,000 people, mostly white. It also has a black population, which is about 50%. It is the only town in the state to be named after a cave, and the only one with a white population of more than 1,500 people. It's located on a creek, which was once a dry creek, but is now rich in gold. The creek is also known as the "Cave River" because of the cave it was located in. It runs through a valley in the middle of which the town is located, and was once called the "Little Piney River" The town's name comes from the cave that was once used to name the creek, and is now known as "The Cave" by the locals. Arts and culture
Historic properties located at the Cave Creek Museum include the Tubercular Cabin, the First Church of Cave Creek, and Golden Reef Stamp Mill. Two historic properties have been converted into restaurants. Another location, Frontier Town, has some of Cave creek's original structures. The Cave Creek Service Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and has been converted to a restaurant. The cave creek museum is open to the public on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekends from 9 to 11 a. m. and 11 to 11 p. m., depending on the time of day. The museum is located in the former home of the First Methodist Church. It is located on the former site of the cave's first church, which was built in the 1800s. The first church was built on the site of what is now known as the "Cave Creek Road" and is now called the "First Church" The museum was established in the early 1900s, and has a collection of more than 100 pieces of memorabilia, including some of the original structures from Cave Creek's history. It also has a museum of photographs of the area, which is on display in the museum's main building. It has been open since the 1950s and is still open to visitors today. The Museum is open on the second floor of the former church, as well as in two other locations in the town. It was founded by the First Mennonite settlers in the mid-19th century.

The drawing of playing cards led to the victory of 25-year-old law student Adam Trenk over incumbent Town Council member Thomas McGuire. "Where the Wild West Lives" was adopted as the town motto by the Cave Creek Town Council during a November 2013 meeting. The Arizona State Constitution allows aGame of chance to be used to broken ties. The town motto was adopted by the Town Council in November 2013. The Town Council voted to adopt the motto at a meeting in June 2014. The motto is based on the book "The Wild West: How the West Lives in Arizona" by Mark O'Mara.
