Pharr is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 70,400, and in 2019, the estimated population was 79,112. The community was named after sugar planter Henry Newton Pharr. Pharr has a humid subtropical climate, similar to that of the Tampa Bay Area of Florida, but with less precipitation and slightly higher summer maximum temperatures. The highest temperature ever recorded in Pharr is 110 °F (43 °C), once in 1998 and once in 1999. The average annual precipitation is 21.0 inches (530 mm) Most precipitation occurs in the warm season, with the least precipitation distinctly occurring in the cooler winter. September is the peak of the north Atlantic hurricane season and tropical storms and hurricanes occasionally drop copious amounts of rainfall on the region. The driest month is March, with 0.7 inches (18 mm) of precipitation. The Pharr city limits extend south in a narrow band to the Rio Grande and the PharrReynosa International Bridge into Mexico. It is connected by bridge to the Mexican city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The city is part of the McAllenEdinburgMission and ReynosaMcAllen metropolitan areas. It has a total area of 23.4 square miles (60.7 km²), of which 0.03 sq miles (0.07 km²) is covered by water. In 1987, Pharr annexed Las Milpas (annexed in 1987).

Geography

Pharr is located in southern Hidalgo County at 26°1223N 98°117W (26.206334, 98.185174). It is bordered to the west by the city of McAllen, to the north by Edinburg, the county seat, and to the east by San Juan. The Pharr city limits extend south in a narrow band to the Rio Grande and the PharrReynosa International Bridge into Mexico. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pharr has a total area of 23.4 square miles (60.7 km²), of which 0.03 sq miles (0.07 km²) is covered by water. The city limits of Pharr extend south to include the town of Las Milpas (annexed in 1987), which is located on the Texas-Mexico border. Pharr is home to the University of Texas at El Paso, which was founded in 1883. The town of Pharra is located near the border with Mexico, and is known as "Pharra" or "Parr" in Spanish. It is located at 26.1223 N 98.117W, and has a population of 1,816. It has a land area of 23.4 square miles (60.7 km²), and 0.3 square miles (0.07 mi) of it is covered with water. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War and the Battle of the Alamo.

History

The community was named after sugar planter Henry Newton Pharr. Pharr was the Republican nominee for Louisiana governor in 1908, as his father had been in 1896. The population of Pharr has grown rapidly since the late 20th century, from a population of 32,921 in 1990 to an estimated 77,320 in 2016 and 79,112 in 2019. In 1987, Pharr annexed Las Milpas. In 2006 Pharr received "The All-America City" award. The town is located on the banks of the Rio Grande River, which flows into the Mississippi River. The river was once part of the Louisiana Canal Company, which at one time owned 8,000 acres (32.4 km²) and which, in 1910, built Pharr on this land. The city is located near the town of New Iberia, which is on the Louisiana-Louisiana border and was founded in 1859. The community was founded on the land owned by the Louisiana Rio Grande Sugar Company and the LouisianaRio Grande Canal Company. It was named for Pharr's father, who was a former president of the company and a former director of the State National Bank of NewIberia. The Pharr community was incorporated in 1910 and was named in honor of Henry N.Pharr, who founded the company in the late 1800s. It is located in the state of Louisiana, near the junction of the Ouachita and Vermilion rivers. It has an estimated population of about 77,000.

In August, the average high is 100 °F  (38 °C); the average lows are 80 °f (27 °C): the warmest day of the year is August 8. The coldest day is August 9, with an average low of 20 °F, and the coldest night is August 10, with a low of 18 °F.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 79,715 people, 22,668 households, and 18,420 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 79.46% White, 0.24% African American, 0.72% Native American,0.23% Asian, 17.32% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. Of the 12,798 households, 47.1% had children under 18 living with them, 64.2% were married couples living together, 16.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.0% were not families. The average household size was 3.64 and the average family size was 4.02. The median age was 27 years, and for every 100 females there were 90.9 males. The city has a population density of 2,240.2 people/sq mi (864.9/km²). About 90.62% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. The per capita income for the city is $9,462, and 35.5% of those under 18 and 23.1%. are living below the poverty line. I-2/U.S. 83 is the city's major eastwest artery. U.S.-281 is co-signed with I-69C. The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge is located on U-281. The majority of Pharr is served by the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District. Zoned PSJAISD schools include PSJA North and PSJA Southwest. A small fringe portion of the city is a part of the Hidalgo Independent school District. Residents are allowed to apply to magnet schools operated by the South Texas Independent School district. Pharr Memorial Library serves the city. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is located in Edinburg. The South Texas College in McAllen is also located in Pharr. The city is home to the Buell Central DAEP, which was established in the 1950s. The Pharr High School football team won the state championship in the 1970s and 1980s. It was the first high school in the state of Texas to win a state championship. The school was also the first to win the state title in the Texas High School Football Championship in the 1980s and the Texas State High School League in the 1990s. There are no high schools in the city, but there are five high schools with around 2,700 and 1,750 students. The high schools are: Thomas Jefferson TSTEM Early College High School, PSJA Sonia M. Sotomayor Early College high School, and BueLL Central DA EP. The town also has a public library, which serves about 1,000 residents. The City of Phar is home of the Phar Memorial Library. The library was established by the city in the 1920s.
