La Joya is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 4,374 at the 2020 United States Census. It is part of the McAllenEdinburgMission and Reynosa metropolitan areas. Its name, meaning "the jewel", was inspired by a small natural lake west of the city; early settlers were said to observe that the lake shined in the sun like a jewel. The site on which La Joya was founded was part of what was known as "Los Ejidos de Reynosa Viejo" (Old Reynosa) The city is located at 26°1431N 98°2848W (26.241996, 98.480138). It is bordered to the east by the city of Peñitas and to the west by unincorporated Havana. I-2 passes through the center of LaJoya, leading east 16 miles (26 km) to thecenter of McAllen and northwest 24 miles (39km) to Rio Grande City. The city has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 km²), of which 4.9 km² is land and 0.2 sq miles (0.5 km²) is water. The U.S. Postal Service operates the La JoyA Post Office. The post office is located in the city and is zoned for zoned schools for residents of Tabasco de Lorenzo Elementary School, Lorenzo Middle School, and Zavala Elementary School.

History

La Joya was named after a small natural lake west of the city. Early settlers were said to observe that the lake shined in the sun like a jewel. The site on which LaJoya was founded was part of what was known as "Los Ejidos de Reynosa Viejo" It was a prosperous community that died out after floods in 1908 and 1909. The settlers moved their belongings just north to higher and less flood-prone ground, present-day La Joya. It is located on the northern bank of the Rio Grande, near the town of Tabasco, in the state of Baja California. The city's name means "the jewel" in Spanish, after the lake where it was named. It was founded by Francisco de la Garza, a descendant of the early colonizers of the area who soon decided to change his last name from de the Garza to Garza. He founded a community, called "Tabasco", adjacent to the northern banks of the River Rio Grande in the early 1800s. He later moved to the site of what is now La JoyA. The town is located in the province of Tamaulipas, on the north coast of Mexico. It has a population of around 2,000 people, about half of whom live in the city of La Joy a. The area was once known as the "birthplace of the Mayan culture" and is now known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

Interstate 2 passes through the center of La Joya, leading east 16 miles (26 km) to McAllen and northwest 24 miles (39km) to Rio Grande City. Walker Lake is in the southeast part of the city limits. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, LaJoya has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 km²), of which 4.2square miles (10.9 km²) are land and 0.2 square miles [0.5 km²] is water. The city is located at 26.1431 N 98.2848 W, with an average daily rainfall of 0.5 inches (1.2 meters) per year. The average daily temperature is 0.7 degrees F (0.4 degrees C) per day. The town has a population of 1,816. It is located near the junction of Interstate 2 and I-20, which leads east to Fort Worth and west to Mc Allen. The nearest airport is Fort Worth, which is about 20 miles (32 km) away. The closest major airport is San Antonio, Texas, at San Antonio International Airport, which has an airport that is about 25 miles (40 km) from the city.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 4,457 people, 1,235 households, and 880 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 63.94% White, 0.18% African American, 0.51% Native American,0.48% Asian, 0,03% Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 97. 18% of the population (Latinos and Hispanics are not an official race). The city's population was spread out, with 34.9% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64. The median income for a household was $22,820, and $23,156 for a family. The per capita income for the city is $7,923. About 50.6% of those under age 18 and 31.2%. of those age 65 or over. The city has a population of 3,303 people, and the population density is 1,187.6 people per square mile (458.7/km²) The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the town. It is the only city in the state to be on the National Highway System, which connects to the Mississippi, Mississippi, and New Mexico.
