Newport is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Arkansas, United States located on the White River 84 miles (135 km) northeast of Little Rock. The population was 7,879 at the 2010 census. Newport is known as the town in which Sam Walton owned a Ben Franklin store prior to starting Wal-Mart. The main campus of the two-year community college, Arkansas State University-Newport, is located here. The Grimes Unit and the McPherson Unit, prisons of the Arkansas Department of Correction, are located in Newport, off Arkansas Highway 384, 4 miles (6 km) east of central Newport. The prison houses the state's death row for women. The U.S. Postal Service operates the Newport Post Office. The city has a total area of 13.7 square miles (35.5 km²), of which 13.4square miles (34.8 km²) is land and 0.27 square miles is water.
