Dermott is a city in Chicot County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,316 at the 2010 census. Dermott was incorporated in 1890. It is home to the Dermott Crawfish Festival, one of the oldest festivals in Arkansas. The city is located at 33°3143N 91°2616W (33.528712, -91.437657) Dermott has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The climate is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. In 2006, a car/truck show was added to the Crawfish festival. The festival was typically held on the third weekend in May. The Crawfish show was typically a two-day art exhibit and print signing there at the festival. It usually ended with his-and-hers car show at the end of the day. The event was sponsored by Dermott Chamber of Commerce through 2006 through Texas artist Larry Dermott, who is a native of Dermott. In 2010, Dermott had a population of 2,889, with 77.8% African American, 20.2% White, 0.1% Native American, and 0.7% Asian. In 2000, there were 4865 people, 1,216 households, and 824 families living in the city. In 2020, there will be 2,021 people, 810 households and 547 families residing in the town. The town has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.4 km²), of which 3.4 square miles is land and 1.2 km², or 1.97%, is water.

Dermott is the primary city name, but also Collins are acceptable city names or spellings, Baxter, Bellaire, Halley, Halley Junction on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Bayou Bartholomew, a tributary of the Ouachita River, touches the southwest corner of the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dermott has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.4 km²), of which 3.4 square miles is land and 0.08 square miles, or 1.97%, is water. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The city is located on the Arkansas River, which runs through the center of the town. Dermott is in the Ouachtita River drainage basin, which is part of the Arkansas-Ouachita County border. The Ouachtitas are a small river that flows through Dermott, leading to the Little Piney River and the Arkansas Turnpike. The town is located near the junction of U.S. Route 165 and Arkansas Highway 35, which leads northwest 23 miles (37 km) to Monticello and south 15 miles (24 km) towards McGehee. The Arkansas River flows through the city, leading north 9 miles (14 km) and south 14 miles (25 km) into Montrose. The Dermott-McGehee Waterway is one of the few rivers in the area that flows into the Ouatchita River.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 2,889 people living in the city. There were 1,404 housing units at an average density of 497.0 per square mile (191.9/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 25.24% White, 73.27% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American and 0.30% Asian. The city's population was spread out, with 29.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 15. 7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.21. The median income for a household in theCity was $17,857, and the median income. for a family was $22,214. About 25.9% of families and 32.5%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.0%. of those under age 18 and 22.4% of those age 65 or over. The per capita income for the city is $9,998. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city will have a population of 2,021 as of the 2020 U.N. Census. It will be the first city in the state to be included in the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. The state's population is expected to rise to 2,000 by the end of the decade.

Arts and culture

The Dermott Crawfish Festival was one of the oldest festivals in Arkansas. The festival was held annually on the third weekend in May and was sponsored by the Dermott Chamber of Commerce. From 1996 through 2006, the Texas artist Larry D. Alexander, who is a native of Dermott, usually ended his Arkansas Schools Tours with a two-day art exhibit and print signing there at the festival. The Crawfish festival also hosted a carnival during the entire week. Other events included in the festival were the annual Rotary Club pancake breakfast, bingo, a horseshoe pitching contest, an antique tractor show, and multiple cash drawings. In 2012 the Dormer Chamber of commerce cancelled the Dermont Crawfishestival and no longer sponsors this event. Community leaders and African American Business owners formed a committee to continue the Spirit of the community and now host Dermott Community Festival. The Dormertown Community Festival is held every year on the last weekend of May. The event is free and open to the public and is open to all residents of Dermertown and its surrounding areas.

Education

Dermott High School's colors are orange and black. The boys basketball teams won state basketball championships in 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1994. The Rams have been in the top in the 2-AA class but have not made a playoff run since 2000, when they made it to the championship game. Dermott has four state championships and numerous regional and tournament championships. For 201214, the Dermott Rams belong to the 2A Region 7 West conference. For its first championship in 1986, Dermott went undefeated (35-0) and won the overall state championship, coached by Willie Parker and Leroy Kennedy. The Dermott School District operates public schools in the community. The school district has been in existence since the early 20th century. The district is part of the Washington County School District, which has been around since the mid-19th century, and has its own school district and school board. It is located in the town of Dermott, which is about 50 miles north of Dormer, Washington, and is home to the Dormers High School and Dermott Junior/Senior High School. The high school is located on the campus of the College of St. Benedict, which was founded in the early 1900s. It was the first high school in the state to be chartered. It has been the site of several state championships, including the 1986 and 1989 state championships. The football team has won the state championship four times in a row, including in 1989 and 1991.
