Valley City is a city in Barnes County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 6,575 during the 2020 census, making it the 12th largest city in North Dakota. Valley City is known for its many bridges over the Sheyenne River, including the Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. The city is also the home of Valley City State University and the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) Valley City was originally called Worthington, and under the latter name was laid out in 1874 when the railroad was extended to that point. The present name is for the city's location in the valley of the SheYenne River. History
Valley City was originally called Worthington, and under the latter name was laid out in 1874. The present name is for the city's location in the valley of the Sheyenne River. A Carnegie Library opened in 1903, through the efforts of the "Tuesday Club," a local women's organization. The inception of the nation's first barber association occurred in Valley City during a state barber convention in February, 1909. A post office was established under the name Worthingon in 18 74, and has continued to operate under thename Valley City since 1878. The city is home to the National Museum of American History, which was opened in 1913. It is also the home of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which opened in 1914. The museum is located on the banks of the river, and was opened by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1915. It was the first museum in the state to be named after an American treasurer, and is located in the National Treasurer's Museum, also in the City of the Rockies, on the outskirts of the city. The National Cinema and Museum of the Rockies opened in 1916, and the city was named after the town's founder, George Washington Carver, in 1917. The City was named after the Valley City, Wyoming, where the first railroad was built in 1872. The City of the Rockies was named for the Valley City, which is in the Sheyenne valley.
