Campton is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 441 at the 2010 census. The annual Swift Silver Mine Festival is held on Labor Day weekend each year.Tyler Booth, Country singer, grew up near the city. Edgar Tolson was a folk artist. Randy Spencer, creator of Kentucky Walking Sticks, is a well known folk artist and songwriter. The city is located at 37°4405N 83°3254W. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), of which 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²) (3.57%) is water. It has a lending library, the Wolfe County Public Library, which is open to the public. It is located on the banks of Swift Creek. Swift Creek is named after Jonathan Swift of the legend of Swift's silver mine. Swift supposedly buried treasure in the area which has never been recovered. The town was a camp town with a small creek, Swift Creek, running through the town. It was once known as "Campton, Kentucky" The city was once called "Camptonsville" by locals. The name is now used to refer to the town of Camptonshire, which was once a part of the county, and is now the name of a separate town, Campton. The current name of the town is "Camton, Kentucky".

History

Campton is the primary city name, but also Bethany, Burkhart, Flat, Gillmore, Lee City, Leeco, Mary, Maytown, Valeria, Zachariah are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Campton, Kentucky. Swift Creek is named after Jonathan Swift of the legend of Swift's silver mine. Swift supposedly buried treasure in the area which has never been recovered. Swift Creek was a small creek running through the town of Campton, New Hampshire. The creek was named after Swift, who lived in the town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town was named for Swift's gold mine, which was located in the middle of the creek. It is believed to have been the site of a gold mine at the time of the discovery of the town's first gold mine in 18th century. The gold mine was never fully recovered, and the town was later moved to a new location in the north of the state. It was later renamed after Swift's home town, where he lived and died in the early 1800s. He was buried in a shallow grave in the creek, which is still believed to be in the same place as the original location of the gold mine. He died in 1820, leaving a legacy of gold and silver in his home town ofCampton, NEW Hampshire, which he left to his descendants. He also left behind a son, Jonathan, who was born in 1821. The son was also buried in Swift Creek, and later died in a different location in New Hampshire in 1828. He is the only person to have ever been buried in this area of New Hampshire, and his descendants have never been able to find the original site of his burial.

Campton is located at 37°4405N 83°3254W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²) of which 1.3 square miles is land and 0.04 sq miles (0.10km²) (3.57%) is water. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force Base, which was founded in 1881. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the city. The World Heritage site was established in 1891 and was named after the town's founder. It is the first World War II-era base. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The United States Air Force base is based in the town, which is now part of the National Guard and the Air Force Reserve. It has a base of operations at the base, which has been called the "Campton Air Force Station" since the 1950s. It also has its own airport, which opened in 1961. The town's name is derived from the word "campton", which means "council" or "town" in English. It's also known as "the town of the same name" and "the city of the hills" in Spanish. It had a population of about 1,000 in the early 1950s and 1,200 in the 1960s.

It opened in a former home of the Wolfe family, which later became the town's seat of government. The current library was built in the early 1900s and is located on the former site of the original Wolfe family home. The town's first public school was opened in 1875. It closed in 1881. It now has its own library, which is open through the end of the 19th century. It also has a loan library. The community has a public library, as well as a public lending library and a private lending library.

Arts and culture

The annual Swift Silver Mine Festival is held on Labor Day weekend each year. It includes a parade and vendors in the downtown area. The festival is one of the largest in the state and draws thousands of visitors. It is held in the town of Swift Silver, which has a population of just over 2,000.
