Paris is a home rule-class city in Bourbon County, Kentucky. It lies 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Lexington on the Stoner Fork of the Licking River. Paris is the seat of its county and forms part of the LexingtonFayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2020 it has a population of 9,846. The city has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.5 km²), of which 5.9 sq miles (15.4 km²) is land and 0.04sq miles (0.1 km²") is water. Paris has a public library, the Paris-Bourbon County Library, and the Paris Museum of Art and Science. It is the "sister city" of Lamotte-Beuvron in France. It was named after the French capital to honor the French assistance during the American Revolution. In 1789, the town was formally established as Hopewell after Hopewel, New Jersey, his hometown. In 1839, it was incorporated as Paris in 1839 and again in 1890. In 2000, there were 9,183 people, 3,857 households, and 2,487 families residing in the city. There were 4,222 housing units at an average density of 621.2 per square mile (239.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 84.23% White, 12.71% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.35% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.62%.

History

Joseph Houston settled a station in the area in 1776, but was forced to relocate due to prior land grants. Lawrence Protzman purchased the area of present-day Paris from its owners, platted 250 acres (100 ha) for a town. In 1789, the town was formally established as Hopewell after his hometown. The next year it was renamed Paris after the French capital to match its county and honor the French assistance during the American Revolution. It was incorporated as Paris in 1839 and again in 1890. Paris is the "sister city" of Lamotte-Beuvron in France. The post office was briefly known as Bourbontown or BourBonton in the early 19th century, but there is no evidence that this name was ever formally applied to the town itself. One Frenchman was noted in a 19th-century state history as having come from Calcutta, via Bengal, and settled here as a schoolteacher. The town is now a suburb of Richmond, Virginia, and was once the seat of Bourbon County. It is located on the banks of the Rappahannock River, which flows into the Potomac River. It has a population of about 2,000, making it one of the largest cities in Virginia. The city is located in the Shenandoah Valley, which is home to the majority of the state's black population. It also has a small population of Native Americans, many of whom came to the area to escape the excesses of their own revolution.

Geography

It has been the location of the state's largest city since the 1930s, with 1,100 residents in the 1950s and 1,300 in the 1960s. It also has the largest airport in the United States, with a capacity of 2,000 vehicles per hour (2,000 km/h). The city's population has declined from 1,800 in the late 1800s to about 1,500 in the 1990s, and it has a current population of 1,400. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the town, which was founded in 1851. It's the only U.K. city to have been declared a World Heritage site in the 1970s. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.62% of the population. The city's population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females,there were 88.9 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was2.90. The per capita income for the city is $16,645. About 17.5%. of families and 17.8% of those under age 18 were below the poverty line, including 24.2% ofThose under age18 and 15,9%. of those age 65 or over. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city has a population of 9,182. The population density is 1,351.2 per square mile (521.7/km²).

Education

Paris has a public library, the Paris-Bourbon County Library. The city also has a museum, the Musée d'Orsay, and the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle. Paris is home to the world's largest collection of books, including more than 1,000 volumes of children's books. Paris has one of the largest libraries in the world, with a collection of more than 2,000,000 books. It is located in the heart of the French capital, near the center of the city, near to the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. It also has the largest library in France, with over 1,200,000 copies of books in circulation. It was founded in 17th century Paris, and was named after the city's first mayor, Jean-Baptiste de Paris, who was born in Paris in 1781. Arts and culture

The Main Street Program in Paris has been active since 1992. From 2006 to 2008, fifteen buildings were renovated at a favorable time for financing such projects. The Vardens Building, located at 509 Main Street, is an example of Victorian architecture and interior design. The Cane Ridge Meeting House is one of the sites of the Great Revival of 1801, where an estimated 25,000 worshipers gathered. The Hopewell Museum is free and open to the public on Wednesday through Saturday afternoons. The Shinner Building is listed by Ripley's Believe It or Not! as the world's tallest three-story structure. The museum is closed the month of January, but is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday for tours. The Nannine Clay Wallis Arboretum is a 4-acre (16,000 m2) arboretm that is home to the Garden Club of Kentucky. It is said to be the largest one-room log structure in the country. It now houses an extensive genealogical collection, and is open on Tuesday through Saturdays for tours, as well as the occasional free admission to the museum on Wednesday and Thursday. It once had a surgeon and dental office on the second floor, and a ballroom on its top floor. The Grand Ballroom hosted many community dances and parties, serving as the ballroom to the Fordham Hotel, formerly located next door. For the inside, Varden had South African mahogany apothecary cabinets made to show his wares. To accent the cabinetry he ordered Tiffany Glass Company stained glass windows.
