Andrews is a town in Georgetown and Williamsburg counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Its population was 2,861 at the 2010 census, down from 3,068 in 2000. General aviation airfield Robert F. Swinnie Airport is 2 miles (3 km) east of its central business district. The town is named after Colonel Walter H. Andrews, who played an important role in the incorporation of the two separate towns in the early 1900s. In the 1920s, Andrews had the title of the fastest growing town in the United States, with a population of 2,000. After the Great Depression, Andrews hit hard, with the population down by 700 when the Atlantic Coast Lumber Co. closed its nearby plant. The economy subsequently improved in the late 1930s when an International Paper mill was built in Georgetown County. Andrews was incorporated to attract businesses to the area after World War II, but it never regained prominence in the area until the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it was the fastest-growing town in South Carolina at the time. It has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) According to the United Nations, Andrews has a population density of 1,856.4 people per square mile (538.4/km²) As of the 2020 United States census, there were 2,575 people, 1,049 households, and 754 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 60.76% African American, 37.55% White, 0.88% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races.

Geography

Andrews is located in western Georgetown County, with a small portion extending west into Williamsburg County. U.S. Route 521 bypasses the town to the south, then passes through the west side of the town. According to the United States Census Bureau, Andrews has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²), all land. Charleston is 59 miles (95 km) to the southwest, and Sumter is 62 miles (100 km) away. South Carolina Highway 41 leads northeast 24 miles (39km) to Hemingway, and southwest 15 miles (24 km), to Jamestown. The town of Andrews is located on the banks of the Little Wando River, which flows into the Little Pungo River. The Little Wandoo River is a tributary of the Yemassee River. It is located near the town of Georgetown, the county seat, and the junction of South Carolina highways 41 and 521. The Town of Andrews was named after the town's founder, William Andrews, who was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in the 19th century. He is credited with helping to establish Georgetown as the state's first post-secondary school. He died in a car accident in the early 20th century, leaving his wife and three children to raise their four children on their own. He was buried in Andrews, along with his wife, in a plot of land known as the "Andrews Cemetry".

History

The towns of Rosemary and Harpers Crossroads were settled along the Georgetown and Western Railroad, which started operation in 1886. In 1909, voters agreed to incorporate the two separate towns into a single community, which was named Andrews. During the 1920s, Andrews had the title of being the fastest growing town in the United States for its age. After World War II, the Andrews Development Board was incorporated to attract businesses to the area. In 1970, the schools were integrated. Rosemary became a middle school. The Andrews school became the elementary/high school. In 1984, Andrews Elementary School was built. In 2000 new middle and high school facilities were built. An expansion to the local branch library began in 2010. It celebrated its centennial year in 2009. The town is located in Georgetown County, North Carolina, near the state line with South Carolina. It has a population of 2,000 and is located near the intersection of Interstate 80 and I-70. It is also near the county seat of Georgetown, which is about 30 miles south of the state capital of Charleston. It was named after Colonel Walter H. Andrews, who played an important role in the incorporation. Andrews worked for the Atlantic Coast Lumber Co. and served as mayor through most of the1920s. In 1915, a town hall was built, which is now a museum. By 1919, Andrews has reached aPopulation of 2, 000 and continued to grow. In 1920, the town was named the fastest-growing community in the U.S.

Education

Public education in Andrews is administered by Georgetown County School District. Trinity Christian Academy is a private institution. Andrews has a public library, a branch of the Georgetown County Library. The town is home to the Andrews High School football team. It is also the home of the Andrews Junior High football team, which won the national championship in 2010. It also has a high school football team that won the state championship in 2011. It has a baseball team that finished second in the state in 2012. The football team is known as the Andrews Maroons, and the team won a state title in 2010 for the first time in its history. The school's mascot is the Maroon Lion, and its colors are red, white, and blue. It was also the site of the town's first football game, in 1961. The team won the district championship in 1962, and again in 1964. The high school team won again in 1966, 1967, and 1968. The district has three high schools: Andrews Elementary, Rosemary Middle School, and Andrews High. The city also has an elementary school, Andrews High, and a middle school, which is called Rosemary School. The public library has a branch in the town, the Andrews Public Library, which was established in 1953. It opened its doors in 1956. It closed its doors again in 1968. It reopened again in 1978, and is still open today. The community has a post-secondary institution, Andrews College, which offers classes in business, science, and nursing.
