History
The area that is now Hidalgo was first settled by Spanish colonists led by José de Escandón circa 1749. The colony was known by multiple names: La Habitación, Rancho San Luis, and San Luisito. In 1852, John Young settled in the area and renamed the town "Edinburgh" after his place of birth, Edinburgh, Scotland. The town was incorporated in 1876, and its name was changed to "Hidalgo" in 1885. Edinburgh became the county seat of Hidal go County. The city's name is derived from the name of the town where Young was born, Edinburgh in Scotland, and the city's first post office was opened in 1852. It is located on the banks of the Rio Grande River, which runs through the center of the city. It was also the site of the Battle of the Algodones, which took place in the early 1800s. The city of McAllen is the largest city in the county, with a population of 1.2 million. HidalGo is located on Texas State Highway 115, which runs north from Hidalago 8 miles (13 km) to McAllen. The highway leads east then north 12 miles (19km) to Pharr, or southeast 54 miles (87 kilometers) to Brownsville. It is one of the largest cities in the state, with McAllen being the biggest city. It is located in the city's central business district, near the intersection of Interstate 10 and I-10. The city is also home to the Hidalgas Museum of Natural History, which was built in the early 20th century. The museum is located on the former site of the town's first post office, which closed in the 1950s. It was later moved to its current location, which is in the center of the community, in the 1960s and 1970s. Hidalgo used to be the home to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G League, who played in the local Payne Arena. The Payne Arena is also a concert venue serving the McAllenEdinburgMission and ReynosaMcAllen metropolitan areas. Former teams include the Rio Grande Valley Magic of the Southern Indoor Football League, the Rio Grande valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League and the La Fiera FC of the Professional Arena Soccer League. It is located in the heart of the city's downtown area, near the intersection of Interstate 20 and I-20, and the highway to the north and south of McAllen. It has also been the site of a number of professional football teams, including the Houston Dynamo, the Dallas Stars, the Houston Texans and the San Antonio Spurs, among others. It also hosted the World Series of Poker, which took place in the early 1990s. The city is now home to a variety of other sports teams, such as the Dallas Mavericks, the New York Rangers, the San Francisco 49ers, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the New England Patriots.
