Edinburg

Edinburg is a city in and the county seat of Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. Its population was 74,569 as of the 2010 census, and in 2019, its estimated population was 101,170. It is the second-largest city in Hidal go County, and the third- largest city in the larger Rio Grande Valley region. The city is located at 26°1815N 98°950W (26.304225, 98.163751). It is bordered to the south by Pharr and to the southwest by McAllen. U.S. Route 281 (Interstate 69C) runs through the east side of Edinburg. US 281 leads north 103 miles (166km) to Alice and 229 miles (369 km) to San Antonio. Downtown McAllen is 10 miles (16 km) south and west. The town was named "Chapin" in honor of one of the developers. It was officially renamed in 1911 and incorporated in 1919. It has a total area of 37.7 square miles (97.6 km²), of which 0.1 sq mi (0.2 km²) or 0.16% is covered by water. In the city, the income for a household in the city was $28,938, and there were 90.5 males over the age of 18 for every 100 females. About 95% of those who selected the "other race" were Hispanic or Latino.

History

Edinburg is a former town in Hidalgo County, Texas. The town was named "Chapin" in honor of one of the developers. A wood-frame courthouse was designed and built beside the Chapin courthouse square in 1908. Construction on a grand courthouse within the square began in 1910 under the supervision of San Antonio builders. Edinburg was officially renamed in 1911 and incorporated in 1919. It is located at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 107. It was named after John Young, a prominent businessman who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. A local myth relates that Edinberg became the county seat of Hidalago County in a dramatic, nighttime covert operation in which the county records were removed from the previous county seat. However, historical records show more practical reasons. The county was over 80 miles long at this time, and state law required that the courthouse be close to the geographic center of a county. When Dennis Chapin was involved in the shooting death of Oscar J. Rountree at the Dan Breen Saloon in San Antonio, the community changed its name to "Edinberg" to honor John Young. The community was incorporated as a city in 1919 and became the city of Edinburgh in 1926. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the city. The city is located on the Texas Panhandle, about 30 miles from San Antonio.

The city is located on the Texas Turnpike, which runs from San Antonio to Laredo. The Turnpix is one of the busiest roads in the state, with more than 100,000 vehicles a day using it. It is located at the junction of Interstate 69C and Interstate 10, which connects San Antonio with the rest of the state. The town has a population of 1,816. Edinberg is located near the town of McAllen. McAllen is 10 miles (16 km) south and west of the center of the town, and the city of Pharr is 10.5 miles (15 km) north. The Texas Turn Pecos River flows through the city, which is located to the east.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, 100,243 people, 29,899 households, and 21,635 families were residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 73.32% White, 0.58% African American, 0.47% Native American,0.65% Asian, 22.71% from other races, and 2.27% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 88.68% of the population. Of the 14,183 households, 46.9% had children under 18 living with them. The median income for a household in theCity was $28,938, and for a family was $30,634. Males had a median income of $27,505 versus $21,010 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,854. About 25.2% of families and 29.2%. of the residents were below the poverty line. In the city, the ag distribution was 33.0% under 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 15.9%. from 45 to 64, and 8. 2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. The average household size is 3.29, and the average family size was 3.71. The city's population as of the census of 2000 was 48,465 people.

Economy

Edinburg is the county seat of Hidalgo County, Texas. Most major county offices are located in Edinburg. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. U.S. Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector Headquarters is at 4400 South Expressway 281. United States Postal Service operates a postal office at 410 S Jackson Road, Ed inburg, Texas, for the Rio Grande valley region of the United States. The city has a mayor, three council members, and a commissioner's Precinct. The mayor is Ramiro Garza Jr., and the council members are Dan Diaz, Jason De Leon, Johnny Garcia, and David White.

Education

Edinburg is the home of the Rio Grande Bible Institute and the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. It is located in the South Texas College District. The city is home to four high schools, one alternative secondary school, six middle schools, and 20 elementary schools. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville operates St. Joseph Catholic School, an elementary and middle school. The first class of UTRGV students began courses in fall 2015. In December 2012, officials announced the merger of the existing University of. Texas- pan American and University ofTexas at Brownsville into a regional institution. The merger is the first time the UT System has merged existing campuses in such a way. It was to also bring the first medical school to the region. The City is served by the Edinberg Consolidated Independent School District. A small portion of the city is in the McAllen Independent School district. In addition, South Texas Independent School districts operates magnet schools that serve Edinsburg. South Texas Business Education & Technology Academy is in Ed inburg. Students also have the chance to attend other South Texas ISD schools in Mercedes -South Texas High School for the Medical Professions and the Science Academy of South Texas. In McAllen, students can attend Memorial High School, Cathey Middle School, and McAllen's Gonzalez Elementary. The town is also home to the Texas Institute of Culinary Arts, which is a private, non-sectarian, college-preparatory school.
