Humble became an oil boomtown in the early 20th century when oil was first discovered there in 1904. By 1905, the Humble oilfield was the largest producing oilfield in Texas. Humble was home of The Humble Oil and Refining Company, a predecessor of Exxon. The city got its name from one of the original founders/settlers, Pleasant Smith Humble, who opened the first post office in his home and later served as justice of the peace. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Humble has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 16,795 people, 6,373 households, and 3,411 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 69.24% White, 14.49% African American, 0.68% Native American, 3.22% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 9.07% from other races. and 3.04% from two or more races. The population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% from 65 to 64. For every 100 years of age or older, the median age was 100 years old or older. The average household size was 262 and the average family size was 318.
History
Humble is the primary city name, but also Atascocita, Kingwood are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Humble. The first settlers began moving into the Humble area in the early 19th century. The area of Humble became a center for commercial activity due to the region's large oil industry. The Humble oil fields are still active and have produced over 138,835,590 barrels (22,073,095 m3) of oil. The city got its name from one of the original founders/settlers, Pleasant Smith Humble, who opened the first post office in his home and later served as justice of the peace. Humble remained a rather small, quiet city until the opening of the Houston Intercontinental Airport in 1969.Humble City Council passed, by a 5-1 vote, a public smoking ban on that took effect on March 6, 2012. The first oil was produced a couple years after the famous Spindletop discovery in Beaumont, Texas. When the oil boom receded, many land owners returned to truck farming, dairy farming and the timber industry. The town was the home of the Humbles Oil & Refining Company, founded in 1911, a predecessor of Exxon. It is located in the Harris County region of Texas, near the border with Louisiana. The town is located on the San Jacinto River, which runs through the center of the city. It was founded in 1828 by Joseph Dunman, who is believed to have been the first settler in the area. In 1885, he was a wood dealer, and in 1900, the District 99, Justice Pct 4, Harris Co., Texas Census reported his occupation as attorney at law.

Most of the petroleum production is shallow and encircles the city by about a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) radius. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The city is located on a salt dome and has a population of about 2,000. Humble is home to the Humble Oil Company, which produces oil and natural gas for the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The company is based in the town of Humble, Texas and has operations in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico. It also has a subsidiary company, the Texas Oil and Gas Company, based in Humble. It is the largest oil and gas company in the state, with a total production of about 3,000 barrels of oil per day. Economy
Petroleum has been the basis of Humble's economy since its beginning. The city was the namesake for Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later merged with the Exxon corporation. Humble is located on the banks of the Humble River, which runs through the center of the city. It is located near the junction of the Ohio and Ohio Turnpike, which connects to the Ohio River and the Ohio Valley, which divides the city into two sections, Humble and Humble Falls, which connect to each other by the Ohio Ohio River, and Humble Falls to the Ohio Ohio River. The Humble Turnpike was built in the 1880s and 1890s. It was named after Humble oil and refining company, which merged with Exxon corporation in the 1950s and 1960s to form the Exxon-Humble corporation. The town's name means "humble oil" or "humbled oil" in English, and "oil refining" means "to refine" in Spanish and "refining" in Spanish. In the 1970s and 1980s, the city was known as "Humble Refining and Oil" and "Oil Refining City," and the name "Oil and Refining" was used to refer to the company's refining facilities. The company was later renamed "Exxon Oil and Oil Company" in the 1980s and 1990s, and later "ExXon Oil and Refined City" in 2000.
Arts and culture
DeLorean Motor Company (DMC), manufacturer of the DeLorean, made famous by the movie Back to the Future, has its only remaining private factory based in Humble. Humble is home to the Humble Negro Cemetery and the Museum of African-American History and Culture. The city is also home to Humble High School, Humble Elementary School, and Humble Junior High School. It is also the home of the American Museum of Natural History and Science, which was founded in 1881. The Humble Museum of Art and Science is located on the corner of Higgins Street and Main Street, and has a collection of more than 100 works of art. The museum is open to the public and offers guided tours of its collections. It also has a museum of African American history and culture, which is open for visitors to the museum's grounds. The Museum of American Natural History is located at 601 Higgins Street, next to the cemetery, and is open daily from 9am to 5pm. It has a private museum, which offers tours of the cemetery and the museum, as well as a small collection of artifacts from Humble's African- American history. It was founded by African-Americans in 1883. The first museum was built in Humbles, and was dedicated to the memory of its founder, John Humble, who died in 1887. The current museum is located in the same building, which dates back to 1883, and opened in 1891. It's the only museum in the city to house the Humbles Museum of Black History and culture.
Parks and recreation
The Shell Houston Open, an annual PGA Tour event is played at Golf Club of Houston. The event takes place at the end of March-beginning of April. It has historically been one week before the Masters Tournament, the season's first major. The course is located in an unincorporated area near Humble. It is one of the oldest golf courses in the U.S., dating back to the early 19th century. It was built in the early 1900s and is located on the banks of the Houston Ship Channel. The club was founded in 1903 and is owned by the Houston Improvement Association. The golf course was originally built to host the Houston Amateur Championship in the 1950s and 1960s. The Houston Golf Club was built on the site of the former Houston Country Club in the 1970s and 1980s, which is located near the city's downtown area. The Golf Club is a member of the American Golf Association and hosts the PGA Championship each year. It also hosts the Houston Open and the Houston Masters. The tournament is held in the same week as the Masters, which takes place in Augusta, Georgia, the week after the first major tournament of the season, the Masters Masters. It takes place on the same course as the US Open Championship, which starts on April 14. The Masters is the oldest major tournament in the world, having been held since Augusta in 1878. The US Open is held on April 21-23, and the Masters is held every year in Augusta.

The majority of the city of Humble is served by the Humble Independent School District. Humble has three public elementary schools: Humble Elementary School, Jack M. Fields, Senior Elementary School and Lakeland Elementary School. Ross Sterling Middle School (formerly by Humble Middle School), and Humble High School are also in Humble. The closest Catholic high school is Frassati Catholic High School in north Harris County. The Humble area is currently served by Lone Star College, Kingwood which operates a Humble Center for outreach. The Harris County Public Library Octavia Fields Branch Library is located at 1503 South Houston Avenue in Humbles.
