Hutchins is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. Its population was 5,338 at the 2010 census. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice operates the Hutchins State Jail for men in Hutchins. The city has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.1 km²), of which 0.23 sq miles (0.6 km²) is covered by water. It is bordered by Dallas on the north and northwest, Lancaster on the southwest, Wilmer to the south, and the Trinity River to the east. Until the end of the school district, C.S. Winn Elementary School was located in Hutchin's. The Hutchins Academic Elementary School also located in the city. The area is within the Board of Trustees District 5. As of fall 2011, the area is zoned to Wilmer-Hutchin Elementary School, Kennedy-Curry Middle School, and Wilmer. High School in Dallas, then under WHISD control, served Wilmer, and Hutchins High School. In November 2010, the DISD announced that Wilmer Elementary School will open in an new building as part of a bond campaign. The Dallas ISD announced in November 2010 that three schools (Wilmer ES, Kennedy ES, and Whitney ES) will be opening in the City of Dallas in 2011. The schools will be part of the Dallas City School District, part of which is the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) The school district was dissolved in spring 2006.

History

Hutchins was first inhabited by families around 1860 as a trading place for immigrants who settled along the west bank of the Trinity River. The town received its name from railroad developer William J. Hutchins, who was then president and general manager of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC) The population of Hutchins grew to around 250 residents in 1884 and topped 300 by 1890. In the first census conducted after incorporation in 1950, the population stood at 743. Despite the rapid growth of Dallas County and most of its suburban communities during the latter half of the 20th century, Hutchins has grown at a much slower pace and today is one of the smallest municipalities in the county. As of 2000, the city of Hutchinson had 133 businesses and a population of 2,805. Many of the businesses in the city are industrial or manufacturing related. A number of its residents are employed in the City of Dallas, which is located just a few miles to the north. The city of Hutchin's was officially incorporated in 1945. The first post office opened in the community in 1872. The population declined slightly to 204 in 1904, but had risen to 500 in 1926. The number of residents in Hutchins was 743 in the census conducted in 1950. In 2000 the city had 133 business and a total population of more than 2,800. It was one of Dallas' smallest municipalities and has 133 businesses as of 2000. It has a population in excess of 1,000 people.

Geography

Hutchins is located at 32°3838N 96°4227W (32.643784, 96.707538), about 9 miles (14 km) south of downtown Dallas. It is bordered by Dallas on the north and northwest, Lancaster on the southwest, Wilmer to the south, and the Trinity River to the east. Interstate Highways 20 and 45 pass through the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.1 km²), of which 0.23 square mile (0.6 km²) is covered by water. The city is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Lancaster, and Wilmer. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Hutchins has a population of 2,816. The population of Hutchins in 2010 was 2,788. It had a population growth rate of 0.7% in the year ending June 2010, and a population loss of 1.2% in 2010. The town is located on the Texas Interstate Highways 20 and 45, which connect Dallas and Fort Worth. The Trinity River runs through the center of the city, and it is also the source of the Trinity River, which flows into the Dallas City Lakes. Hutchins is a suburb of Dallas and is located near the Dallas suburb of Lancaster.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, 5,607 people, 970 households, and 654 families were residing in the city. The city's population is expected to rise to 6,000 by the end of the decade. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I and II, and has since been replaced by the Battle of Gettysburg. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice operates the Hutchins State Jail for men in Hutchins. The Hutchins City Jail is located in the town's downtown area. Education

Hutchins is served by the Dallas Independent School District. The area is within the Board of Trustees District 5. Wilmer Hutchins Elementary School will open in an area of the City of Dallas in 2011. Dallas County residents are zoned to Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College or DCCC) The Atwell Public Library serves Hutchins. The Hutchins Academic Elementary School was also located in Hutchins, but closed in 2004. In 2004 the WHISD board voted to close Hutchins academic, which had 82 students at the time of closure. The former students moved to C.S. Winn and Wilmer Elementary School in Wilmer in January 2005. In November 2010 DISD announced that three schools would open/reopen in the Wilmer-Hutchin area in 2011, including Wilmer and Kennedy-Curry Middle Schools. The Wilmer school will be located in the former Wilmer High School building, which was demolished in 2008 as part of a 2008 bond campaign. The new Wilmer high school will also be in the old Wilmer middle school building, and will be in a new area of Dallas. In 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 they included J.P. Starks, Martin Weiss, and Whitney Young Elementary Schools. From 2007-2008 to 2010-2011, the elementary schools serving Hutchins only included Martin Weiss and Whitney young Elementary Schools (in two separate attendance zones) From 2005 to 2006, until 2010- 2011 secondary schools included Hulcy (Weiss zone) and Zumwalt Middle Schools (Starks and Young zones) and Carter High School (Stark and Young zone).

Union Pacific's Dallas Intermodal Terminal is located partly in the city of Hutchins and partly in Wilmer. The terminal is located in the Dallas suburb of Wilmer, Texas.
