Duncanville

Duncanville is a city in southwest Dallas County, Texas, in the United States. The city is part of the Best Southwest area, which includes Duncanville, Cedar Hill, DeSoto, and Lancaster. Duncanville recognizes the importance of the former Duncanville Air Force Station, which closed on July 1, 1964, but the Army continued to operate the Nike Missile air defense operations until 1969, when the facility was turned over to the city. The Texas Historical Commission has designated the City of Duncanville as an official Main Street City. The Duncanville Public Library is located at 201 James Collins Boulevard. The ISD is the largest in the nation, and the largest school district in the world in terms of physical size. At about 900,000 square feet (84,000 m2), the Duncanville High School is the 17th largest school in the U.S., and the second largest in Texas. The school is zoned to Duncanville ISD, which enrolls about 3,750 students annually, with about 4,000 students during the 2010-2011 school year. The town's population increased from about 13,000 in 1970 to more than 31,000 in 1988. History

Settlement of the area began in 1845, when Illinois resident Crawford Trees purchased several thousand acres south of Camp Dallas. By the late 19th century, Duncanville was home to a dry-goods stores, a pharmacy, a domino parlor, and a school. During World War II, the Army Air Corps established a landing field for flight training on property near the present-day intersection of Main St and Wheatland Road. During the postwar years, the military developed the Army's old landing field into the Duncanville Air Force Station, which was the headquarters for the four Nike-Hercules missile launch sites guarding Dallas/Fort Worth from Soviet bomber attack. The Texas Historical Commission has designated the City of Duncanville as an official Main Street City. The city is now known for its racial diversity. Its population increased from about 13,000 in 1970 to more than 31,00 in 1988. The town's population reached 5,000 by 1962, and citizens adopted a home-rule charter with council-manager city government. The "stone igloo", a spring house originally located near the intersection of Center Street and Cedar Ridge Road, was preserved in a unique way. In the late 1960s or early 1970s, it was demolished, thereby producing a supply of rocks used to build a replica of the structure at a nearby park and paving the way for the construction of a neighborhood retail center. Several pieces of the city's history are preserved at theDuncanville Historical Park, which is located onWheatland Road in Armstrong Park.

Geography

The city's population was 1,071 at the 2010 census. It has a population of 1,081. The town is located in the U S. Army Corps of Engineers's Camp Pendleton, which is located just south of the town of Duncanville. It is home to the National Park Service, which was established in 1872. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located near the town. It was named after the town's founder, William Duncan, who was born in the area in 1851. The site is also known as the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1875. It's also known for the Battle of the Bulges, which occurred in 1881. The Battle was the first battle of the Civil War, which began in the late 1800s, and ended in the early 1900s. The Battle of the Bulge was fought between the American Civil War and the American Revolution, which ended in 1864. The battle was the first to be won by the United States, and the last to be fought by the United States Army, which won the battle in 1871.

Duncanville City Hall is located at 203 E. Wheatland Road. The Duncanville Recreation Center features meeting rooms, a double gymnasium, and an indoor walking track. Armstrong Park is also located next to City Hall. Duncanville has three walking trails, 17 city parks, and many other recreation spaces for team sports. U.S. Route 67 runs through the eastern portion of Duncanville, and Interstate 20 passes through its northern portion. The city is a voluntary member of the North Central Texas Council of Governments association, the purpose of which is to coordinate individual and collective local governments and facilitate regional solutions. The United States Postal Service operates the Duncanville Post Office.The Duncanville Public Library is Located at 201 James Collins Boulevard. It is located in the city's central business district, near the intersection of I-20 and I-67. It has a collection of more than 100,000 books, many of which are free to the public. It also has a library branch that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The library is located on the second floor of a building that was built in the early 1900s. It was originally built to house the Texas State Library, which was later moved to its current location in the mid-20th century. The public library is open from 9am to 5pm every day, and has a computer lab that can be used for research and other computer-related purposes. The town has a public library that was opened in the late 1950s.

Duncanville is served by the Duncanville Independent School District. 13 of the 17 schools in the district are rated exemplary or recognized by the Texas Education Agency. The district's ratings continue to outperform those of the surrounding districts (Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Lancaster, Dallas, Grand Prairie). They also outperform many of the school districts throughout the DallasFort Worth area. Dallas County residents are zoned to Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College or DCCCD). Duncanville is also home to the administrative offices of Advantage Academy, which enrolls over 4,000 students each year. The high school campus is the largest in Texas, the nation, and the world in terms of physical size. At about 900,000 square feet (84,000 m2), the DHS campus is also the largest of its kind in the world. The school district is home to a number of non-profit organizations, including the Dallas County Foundation for the Arts, which provides grants and scholarships to students in need of financial aid. It also has a chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which serves students from across the country and around the globe. It is the only school district in the state of Texas to have a chapter in the U.S., and the only one in the United States to have two chapters in Europe, which is also a member of the European Union. It was founded in 1883. It has a campus that is one of the oldest in Texas and the second largest in the nation.
