DeSoto is a suburb of Dallas and is part of the Best Southwest area. The area was first settled in 1847, making it one of the oldest communities in North Texas. In 1950, the city covered approximately 15 square miles (39 km²) By 1960, the population had grown to 1,969. In 2000, African Americans were 45.53% of the city's population, up from 20.83% in 1990. In 2005, the National Civic League named DeSoto an "All-America City" The city is located at 32°3557N 96°2857N (W32°5.5.28) The city has a total area of 21.6 square miles, all of it land (56.6 km²), and there were 56,145 people, 19,041 households, and 13,041 families in the city in the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 estimate. The city government has a council-manager form of government with a type of local government of the type of government of this day, the local government form of the day, and a city council meeting of the form of this type, the first of which was held on March 15, 1949. The current mayor is Wayne A. Chowning, who was elected in March 2009. The mayor was elected by a vote of the aldermen, and the city council was formed on March 14, 2010. The council is made up of five members, including two women.

History

After World War II, DeSoto and surrounding areas began to grow. In 1950, the city was less than one square mile in size. In 2006, the National Civic League named the city an "All-America City" The city's population surpassed 30,000 in 1990. In 2000, African Americans were 45.53% of the population, up from 20.83% in 1990 and 7.30% in 2000. In 2010, the population was 17.4% non-Hispanic white, down from 17.7% in the 1990 census. The city is one of the oldest communities in North Texas. The area was first settled in 1847, and the settlement was named in honor of Thomas Hernando deSoto Stewart, a doctor dedicated to the community. The population declined to below 50 in 1930, and by 1950, there were 298 people and eight businesses in the city. In the early 1970s, continued growth brought about improvements to the municipal infrastructure, including road construction, and a new water/sewage system. Industrial, commercial, and residential construction also increased in the 1980s. By 1984, De soto had a total of 360 businesses. In 2005, Desoto had approximately 45,500 residents as of 2005, making it the largest and most diverse city in southwest Dallas County. The town's Town Center has become an anchor of the community, housing city hall, the public library, a civic center and the recreation center. There is also a 180-seat auditorium and outdoor amphitheater.

Geography

DeSoto is located at 32°3557N 96°5132W (32.599286, 96.858828).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.6 square miles (56 km²), all of it land. DeSoto has a population of 2,816. The city is located on the banks of the Red River. The Red River flows through the center of the city. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, near the junction of the Arkansas and Arkansas Turnpike. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population to be 2,716. It is the state's second largest city, after Piedmont, Texas. The state's population is 2,917. It has a latitude of 32.5°N, and a longitude of 96°W, and is located near the Arkansas-Piedmont Turnpix border. The United States Geological Survey has recorded the city as having an area of 21.6 square miles (56 km²) and an area of 6.2 square miles (8.4 sq mi) (2.3 km) in DeSotos. It also has an elevation of 32°35 N, 96°5 132W (2.5 °5 m), and a land mass of 2.7 sq miles (6.8 km), or 21.4 square miles.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 56,145 people, 19,041 households, and 13,093 families residing in the city. The city's population is expected to rise to 56,000 by the end of the decade. The population of the city is projected to reach 60,000 in the next decade. It is the most populous city in the state, with a population of 50,000. It has the highest percentage of African-Americans in the United States, with more than 30,000 people living there. It also has the lowest percentage of whites, with only 3,000 residents. The largest city to have a black population is New York City, with 4,000 inhabitants. The lowest percentage is found in the town's suburbs, with just over 2,000 living there in total. The highest percentage is in the northern part of the town, where there are about 4,500 people. The town has a high percentage of Hispanic residents, with about 6,000 of them living in the downtown area. The most common ethnicity is African-American, followed by whites. The majority of residents live in the central part of town, which is the city's northern part. The oldest residents are from the town of New York. The biggest city to be within the city limits, the city has a total population of 56,144 people, with the majority of its residents being Hispanic or Latino. It was the site of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the first city to incorporate.

Government

DeSoto is a home-rule city with a councilmanager form of government. Under this type of local government, the day-to-day management of the city is directed by a city manager. The city manager is appointed by the city council and serves as chief administrative officer for the city. The mayor represents the city as a whole and six council members represent particular districts (places) within theCity. All are elected citywide for a term of three years with two-term term limits. Brandon Wright, the current city manager of DeSoto, is the current mayor of the town of 2,000 people. He was elected to a three-year term in 2010. He is the first mayor to be elected in the city since the city was founded in 1858. The current mayor has been in office for three years and is the third mayor in the town's history. He took office on January 1, 2010. The council consists of the mayor and 6 council members. The position of city manager was created by the DeSOTO city charter on July 1, 2006. The job is to execute the laws and administer the government of the City. The City manager is the chief administrative Officer for the City of De Soto. He serves a three year term with a two-year maximum term. He has been appointed to the position by the City Council on July 2, 2007. He will serve a threeyear term. The Mayor is elected for a three years term, with a maximum term of four years.

Education

DeSoto lies within the DeSoto Independent School District. The district has 12 schools (7 Elementary, 3 Middle, a High School and Freshman Campus) that serve approximately 8,000 students. There are several private and parochial schools in or near the city. Dallas County residents are zoned to Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College or DCCCD), which is located in Dallas. A small portion of the city is also located in the Duncanville Independent school District. Another small portion is in the Dallas Independent School district. The city's mascot is the eagle, which is also the school district's mascot. It is also known as the "Eagle City" because of the district's eagle mascot. The town's nickname is "The Eagle City" and is derived from the city's eagle-shaped shape. It has a population of about 3,000. It was once known as "The Big City" due to its large size. The name was changed to "The City" in the 1970s. It now has a name that means "The Little City" or "The Town" in English. It also has a number of nicknames, such as "Little Town" and "The Village" It is located on the Texas Turnpike, which was once called the "Texas Turnpikes" The town was once part of the U.S. Highway System and was called "The Highway System" before it was renamed "The Texas TurnPike" in 1973.

Transportation

The DeSoto Heliport is a helicopter base in Texas. The facility is operated by SKY Helicopters. It is located on Interstate 35E/U.S. Route 77. The city of DeSOTO jointly owns the heliport with the Texas Department of Transportation and the deSoto Economic Development Corporation. The airport is located near the Texas-Oklahoma border. It was built in the 1950s and 1960s by the city and the state of Texas. It has a capacity of about 1,000 aircrafts and 1,200 landings. It also has an airfield, which can accommodate up to 2,000 helicopters. The heliports are located on the east and west sides of the city, near Interstate 35 and U.S., Route 77, respectively. The airfield is also used by the Texas Air National Guard and the Texas Army National Guard, which uses it to land military helicopters and airlift cargo to the nearby Texas State College and University of Texas airports. It opened in the 1970s and is the city's only heliporting facility. In the 1990s, it was expanded to accommodate more helicopters. It now has a total of about 2,500 aircrafts, including more than 1,500 military helicopters. In 2008, the city added a second helipad. It will be completed in the 2010s and will be fully operational by the end of the decade. It sits on the site of the former Texas Air National Guard base, which was closed in the 1980s.
