Universal City is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It borders San Antonio to the northeast, and is adjacent to Randolph Air Force Base. The population was 19,720 at the 2020 census. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The mean center of Universal City is located at 29°3310.381N 98°1827.274W (29.5528-83698, 98.3075-76166). This is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of downtown San Antonio. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 square miles (15 km²), all of it land. The city is served by the Judson, Randolph Field and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School Districts. It also has two private K12 schools: First Baptist Academy ofUniversal City (FBA) and Calvary Chapel Christian Academy (CCCA), a tuition-free institution. The Universal City Public Library is in the city.Northeast Lakeview Community College, a campus of the Alamo Colleges, is located in Universal City. There is also a community college called Northeast Lakeview College, located in the same city as the public library. It was established in 1960 and is a member of the Southwest Association of Independent Colleges and Schools (SAIC), a state-level institution of higher education that offers a variety of programs and certificates. The college is located on the campus of Southwest University.
History
Universal City is the primary city name, but also Universal Cty are acceptable city names or spellings, Live Oak, Randolph AFB, Randolph Air Force Base on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Universal City. Universal City was established in 1960. Through Universal City is Pat Booker Road, the commercial thoroughfare of the city. The river runs through the center of Universal City. It was named after Universal City, a city in New York state, where the city was founded in 1960, and the city's name means "city" or "town" in English, and "cities" in Spanish. It also has the name "Universal City" in honor of the original city, which was built in the late 19th century, and was named for the Universal City Foundation, a philanthropic foundation that was established by the city in the early 20th century. The current city is named for Universal City's founder, William "Bill" Booker, who was born in the city and died in the 1930s, and is buried in the town's main square, the Pat Booker Memorial Park, in front of which is a statue of his father, William Booker, Jr. "Pat Booker" and his mother, Mary Booker "Pat" Booker "Patsy" Booker. The city is located in the Rio Grande Valley, which was once part of the state of Texas. The Rio Grande River runs through the center of the city. It is also the source of the San Antonio River, which flows through the city and into the Texas Turnpike. The turnpike was built in the 1800s and is one of the nation's oldest. It was named after the town of Universal, Texas, where the city was founded in 1805. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in and around the city of Universal. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 3,000. The area has a land mass of 5,000 square miles, or 15 km², with most of that land being made up of urban agglomerations.
