Huron is a city in Beadle County, South Dakota, United States. It is currently the eighth largest city in South Dakota. The population within the city limits was 14,263 at the 2020 census. Huron was once in the running for capital of South Dakota but lost out to Pierre due to Pierre's positioning. The city has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers, cold, dry winters, and wide temperature extremes. The average window for freezing temperatures are September 30 through May 5, allowing a growing season of 147 days. The town is home to the South Dakota State Fair, which is held six days before Labor Day. It also has a statue known as "The World's Largest Pheasant", which was refurbished in the summer of 2011.Huron has been assigned the ZIP codes 57350 and 57399 and the FIPS place code 31060. It has a total area of 10.57 square miles (27.38 km²), of which 9.48 sq miles (24.55 km²) is land and 1.09sq miles (2.82 sq km) is water. It was named after the Huron Indians, and once was the fourth biggest city in the state. In recent years, Huron's population has once again started to grow after nearly 20 years of stagnation. A Walmart Supercenter opened in the mid 2000s. Since Walmart's opening more commercial and residential development has occurred with the completion of a new Runnings store.

Geography and climate

Huron has a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers, cold, dry winters, and wide temperature extremes. The normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 16.0 °F (8.9 °C) in January to 73.7°F (23.2 °F) in July. The average window for freezing temperatures are September 30 through May 5, allowing a growing season of 147 days. Snowfall averages 44.4 in (113 cm) per season, and has historically ranged from 10.1 in (26 cm) in 193031 to 89.6 in (228cm) in 200001. The city has been assigned the ZIP codes 57350 and 57399 and the FIPS place code 31060. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 10.57 square miles (27.38 km²) of land and 1.09 sq miles (2.82 km²), of which 9.48 square miles is land and the rest is water. It is part of USDA hardiness zone 4b, which means it has a high risk of mold and mildew, and a low risk of mosquito and rodent infestation. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Huron, where the city was founded in 1887. The town is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Great Lakes, which flows through Huron.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 12,592 people, 5,418 households, and 3,179 families residing in the city. There were 6,023 housing units at an average density of 635.3 per square mile (245.3/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 86.9% White, 1.0% African American, 1,2% Native American, 4.9%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.8%. The median income for a household in theCity was $29,097. Males had a median income of $27,027 versus $19,921 for females. The per capita income for the City was $18,275. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Little Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the City. The river is one of the few places in the U.S. where it is possible to cross the river without crossing the river into the state of New Mexico. It is also one of only a handful of cities in the United States that has a population of more than 10,000. The population of this city was 11,893 as of the 2000 census, and 11,872 in the 2010 census. The average household size was 2.27, and the average family size is 2.94. The median age in thecity was 39.8 years, with 24.1% of residents being under the age of 18.

Government

The Huron government is "commissioner form" The board of commissioners consists of a mayor and four commissioners, who are all elected at large for three-year terms. The commission has control over all departments of the city and can make and enforce rules and regulations which it may see fit for the organization, management, and operation of the departments. Huron has a federal building, field offices that is home to Social Security Administration, Western Area Power Administration, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, General Services Administration, Farm Service Agency and the USDA.Huron is also home to Area offices for state offices. The city is located on the Ohio Turnpike, which runs through the town of Huron. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is located near the Ohio River, which flows through the city to the Ohio Valley. The Huron area is known as the "Ohio River Valley" because it is the only area of the state that has a river running through it. It also has a lake, which is the main source of water supply for the city. The water supply is controlled by the Huron Water Authority, which was established by the Ohio State Legislature in 1894. The state has a water treatment system that is run by the state Water Resources Board, which has a board of directors. The Water Treatment Board is made up of five members, four of whom are elected at-large. The board has the power to impose penalties for violations of the water treatment law.

History

Huron was named for the Huron Indians. The city still operates under the original charter and seal. Cheryl Ladd replaced Farrah Fawcett of the original Charlie's Angels. Gladys Pyle was the first female member of the South Dakota House of Representatives and the first Republican woman in the US Senate. Hubert H. Humphrey was the Democratic nominee for president in 1968 and served as vice president under Lyndon B. Johnson. From 1880 until the capital was permanently located at Pierre in 1904, Huron was in the thick of the fight for the honor of being the capital city. Campbell and Winter Parks are the only remaining properties that were once designated capital grounds. Victorian houses originally built around 1906 occupy the city block on the land originally slated for the capitol building. The original plat covered 11 blocks from 1st Street to 3rd Street and from Iowa Avenue SE to Ohio Avenue SW. The first settler was John Cain, a practical printer from Troy, New York. He learned in Chicago, from the railroad people, that they would have their chief town and operating headquarters at their James River crossing. The company gained title to 880 acres (3.6 km²) of land at that location. The town site was surveyed and platted in 1880. It was incorporated as the City of Huron in 1883. It is located in east central South Dakota, near the junction of the James River and the Missouri River. It has a population of around 2,000.

Education

The Huron School District has three public elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Huron is also home to a Catholic elementary school called Holy Trinity School, and a private Christian school on the north side of town called James Valley Christian School. It was the home of Si Tanka University (formerly Huron College) from 1983 to 2005. The current assistant principal of the Huron High School is Rodney Mittelstedt, as of 202021 school year. The school's mascot is the "Tigers" and the school's colors are blue and white. The high school is named after Huron, a town in the north of the district that was once part of the state of Minnesota. The district also has a middle school called Huron Middle School and an elementary school named Huron Elementary School. The middle school is located in the south of the school district, and the elementary school is in the east. The elementary school has a name that means "little school" and is called "Huron Elementary". The high School has a mascot that is named "The Tigers" and its colors are orange and black. It has a high school that was named after the town of Huron and is known as "The High School" as well as a middle and elementary school that are called "The Middle School" and "The Elementary School" Huron's high school was named for the town's first high school, which was founded in 1872. The town's name is also used as a reference to Huron County, where the town is located.

Entertainment

The city government built a new water park (Splash Central) on the property that Huron University (Si Tanka) once occupied. The Huron Event Center was opened connecting the Arena and the Crossroads, a local hotel; the event center is owned by the city. The State Fair is at the South Dakota State Fair Speedway. The city bought the Fine Arts Center and operates it as a theater for the community. The City of Huron owns and operates the Huron Arena, which is used for concerts and other events. It also owns and runs the State Fair, which takes place at the Speedway. It is also the home of the Sioux Falls Kiwanis Club, which has been around since the early 1900s. It was founded by the Sioux Sioux in the 1800s and is still in operation today. It has been known to host the Dakotas State Fair since the 1930s. The state fair is held every year from September to November. It runs from August to October and is the largest state fair in the U.S., with more than 100,000 people attending each year. The fair is the only one of its kind in South Dakota. It's also the only state fair that is open to non- Dakotan residents. The South Dakota Department of Health and Human Services runs the state fair every year. It provides health and human services services to the community, as well as a number of other services such as mental health and addiction treatment. The town also has a large number of non-profit organizations, such as the local chapter of the NAACP.

Transportation

U.S. Route 14 is an eastwest route passing through the northern part of Huron. The Huron Regional Airport is city-owned. It had scheduled passenger flights operated by a commuter air carrier, Great Lakes Airlines, with Beechcraft 1900D commuter turboprop aircraft service to Denver. The airport does not currently see scheduled service. The Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad runs eastwest, with maintenance facilities and a working roundhouse in the city. It intersects with northsouth South Dakota Highway 37. This was the historical designation of the northsouth U.S. Route 281, which was later moved to a more direct route that passes about ten miles west ofHuron. It was also the location of the city's first post office, which opened in 1883. It is located on the banks of the Red River, which flows through the city to the north. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the north and east. The city is home to the Huron High School, which has been in operation since 1881. It also has a high school, Huron Junior High, and Huron Senior High, which were founded in 1882. The high school was the site of the first high school in Huron, opening in 1884. It now has a junior high and senior high, which is located in the east of the town. The town also has an elementary and middle school, which open in 1885. The local high school has been open since 1887.
