Fayetteville is a city in and the county seat of Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States. It is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, a major U.S. Army installation northwest of the city. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 208,501, It is the 6th-largest city in North Carolina. The Fayetteville metropolitan area is the largest in southeastern North Carolina and the fifth-largest in the state. The area was heavily settled by Scots in the mid/late 1700s, and most of these were Gaelic-speaking Highlanders. The local post office is sometimes called "golden" during the 1780s, the decade of the American Revolution when the town was first called "Fraser's Highlanders" and the 71st Regiment of Foot was the regiment's mascot. The city was named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who significantly aided the American forces during the war. He visited the city on March 4 and 5, 1825, during his grand tour of the United States, and it was the first city to be named in his honor in the United states. The town is named for a Scottish woman known for aiding Bonnie Prince Charlie after his army's defeat at Culloden in 1746, Charlie's wife, Flora MacDonald, was a staunch Loyalist and aided her husband to raise the Scots to fight for the King against the Revolution.
History
Fayetteville is the primary city name, but also E Fayetteville, E Fayettevlle, East Fayetteville are acceptable city names or spellings, E Fayettevill, Eastover, Fay, Vander on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Fayetteville. Fayetteville was founded in 1783 in honor of French military hero Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. The area was heavily settled by Scots in the mid/late 1700s, and most of these were Gaelic-speaking Highlanders. Fayetteville had what is sometimes called its "golden decade" during the 1780s. It was the site in 1789 for the state convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution and for the General Assembly that chartered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is the site of the second-oldest militia unit in the country, the second oldest being the Independent Light Infantry, which was formed in 1793. The first African-American church in the town is called the Metropolitan Zion Church, named for Henry Evans, a free black preacher who was known as the "Father of the Methodism" in the area. The city is named for Fayette County, North Carolina, where it was once part of Rowan County, and Cumberland County, which is now part of Fayettevillle. The town is located on the Cape Fear River, the only navigable waterway entirely within the colony. It has a population of more than 100,000, making it one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, with more than 1,000 people living in the city alone. The population of the city is estimated to be about 1.5 million, or 1.7 million people.
Geography
Fayetteville is located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, between the coastal plain to the southeast and the Piedmont to the northwest. The city is built on the Cape Fear River, a 202-mile-long (325 km) river that originates in Haywood and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. On April 16, 2011, Fayetteville was struck by an EF3 tornado during North Carolina's largest tornado outbreak. The total area of the city is 147.7 square miles (382.6 km²), of which 145.8 sq miles (377.7 km²) is land and 1.9sq miles (4.8 km²] is water. The temperature record for Fayettevillians is 110 °F (43 °C) on August 21, 1983, which was the highest temperature ever recorded in the State of N.C. The area has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with mostly moderate temperatures all year round. It is bordered on the north by the town of Spring Lake and on the west by the Hoke County line. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city has a population of 1.2 million (1.3 million people). The city's population in 2010 was 1.4 million (0.7 million people) with a population growth rate of 0.7%. The city has an area of 147.8 square miles, or 1.8% of its total area.

Fayetteville is home to St. Patrick Church, the oldest Catholic parish in the state, dating back to the 18th century. Old Bluff Presbyterian Church is one of the oldest churches in the Upper Cape Fear Valley. The Masjid Omar ibn Sayyid mosque was named after Omar ibn Said, an African Muslim who was jailed as a fugitive slave and sold in Fayetteville in the 19th Century. On September 30, 2005, the city annexed 27 square miles (70 km²) and 46,000 residents. Some affected residents and developers challenged the annexation in the courts, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Fayetteville is the hub for shops, restaurants, services, lodging, health care and entertainment. Fort Bragg and Pope Field pump about $4.5 billion a year into the region's economy. The school system's headquarters are located in Fayetteville, and the schools serve all cities and towns of the county. The CCS system is funded by the state of North Carolina and the federal government. It is the largest school system of its kind in the United States. The system is also the largest in North Carolina, with more than 1,000 students enrolled in private schools and colleges. Fayetteville Regional Airport is served by five regional carriers that provide daily and seasonal passenger services to three major airline hubs within the United States. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Station, built in 1911, provides daily Amtrak service with northbound and southbound routes leading to points along the East Coast.
