Wentzville is an exurb of St. Louis that is located in western St. Charles County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 44,372, making it the 15th largest city in Missouri. The Wentzville Tobacco Company Factory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. One of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the 2021 Kabul airport attack was from WentZville. The community has the name of the chief engineer of the Northern Missouri Railroad Erasmus Livingston Wentz. The city is home to the Rotary Park, which is host to the St Charles County Fair and the St Louis Renaissance Festival. It is the location of the first Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the United States, which was dedicated in 1984. It has become a regular stop in the national "Run for the Wall" trip for veterans. The population of the city was 29,070 as of the census of 2010, with 10,305 housing units at an average density of 516.3 per square mile (199.3/km²) The city has a total area of 19.98 square miles (51.75 km²), of which 19.96 square miles [51.70 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles of land [0.05 km²] is water. In 2000, there were 13,931 people, 2,456 households, and 1,846 families living in the city. In 2010, the population density was 1,456.4 inhabitants per squaremile (562.3 /km²).
History
Wentzville is the location of the first Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the United States. The community has the name of the chief engineer of the Northern Missouri Railroad Erasmus Livingston Wentz. The Wentzville Tobacco Company Factory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. One of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the 2021 Kabul airport attack was from Wentzville. It has become a regular stop in the national "Run for the Wall" trip for veterans. It began as a tree of lights to help raise money in 1967 to send gifts to active servicemen, but later evolved by 1984 to a carved eagle atop a pillar of granite. It is located on the Missouri River, which runs through the center of the town. It was laid out in 1855 and has a post office that has been in operation since 1859. The town has a population of about 2,000 and is located near the Missouri-Missouri state line, about 30 miles south of St. Louis. It also has a small airport, which is located about 20 miles from the town's central business district, and is on the state highway that runs through Wentzilvile. The post office was established in 1859, and the community has a tobacco company factory that was listed in the National register of historic places in 1990, which was listed as a national historic site in 1990 and is still in use today. It's located on a river, which flows through the middle of the city.

The Ohio River flows through the city and into the Mississippi River. The river was once known as the "Ohio River" and is now known as "The Mississippi River" or "The Little Mississippi" The city was founded in the 18th century by German settlers. It was named after the city's founder, who was born in the area in 1808. The town's name is derived from the town's German name, "Wenzville" which means "home of the saints" and means "beautiful" in German. It is also the name of a former town in the region, which was once called "Wenzville" and "Wetzville" by the Germans. Government
The government of Wentzville consists of a mayor, six aldermen (two for each ward), and a city administrator. City Administrator is a non-elected position, whereas the others are elected. The city is divided into three wards. Mayors serve four-year terms. Aldermen serve two-year term. The mayor is elected for a four year term, while the alderman are elected for two year terms. The council is made up of seven members, with the mayor and the city administrator being the only two members. The president of the city council is the mayor's son, David, who is also the city's mayor for a second term, and the mayor of the town's first term, Robert, who was elected in 2008. The current mayor is the son of former mayor, Bob, who died in office in 2010. The town is divided in three wards, two of which are under the control of a single council member, and one under the mayor. The wards are: 1, 2, and 3, with two seats each for the mayor, city administrator, and a council member for a third term. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It has a population of 2,000. It was once known as "Wentzville," but is now known as the "City of the Stars" because of its location on the Mississippi. It also has a reputation for being a good place to live and to do business.
Economy
One of the city's largest employers, from 2013 to 2017, was Serco. The British-based company was awarded a five-year contract in 2013 to manage the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The Wentzville Serco facility attracted national attention in 2014 after whistle-blower allegations revealed that workers spent large amounts of time sleeping or playing games due to lack of work. At its peak, Serco employed approximately 1,500 employees. In 2018, the company announced its closure of the processing center to coincide with the end of its five- year contract with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services. Closing of the facility resulted in the loss of 850 jobs. The city's major employer is General Motors which has a full size van and small truck assembly plant located there. According to the 2020 Popular Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city were: General Motors, the US Fidelis call center, and the US Social Security Administration. The state's unemployment rate is 3.7 per cent, the lowest in the state. The average household income is $50,000, the state's median income is about $60,000 and the average household wealth is $75,000. The U.S. poverty rate is 4.2 per cent; the national average is 5.1 per cent. The unemployment rate has been at 3.8 per cent for the past three years, the highest rate in the U. S. since 2000. It is the highest in the United States.
Education
Wentzville R-IV School District covers Wentzville, Lake St. Louis, Foristell, Dardenne Prairie and parts of O'Fallon. Catholic schools include St. Patrick School which hosts preschool through eighth grade. Immanuel Lutheran School is a private Christian school off Highway N.Lindenwood University has a satellite campus located in the building that was formerly home to the Southern Air Restaurant, which was last owned by Chuck Berry.Urshan College and Urshan Graduate School of Theology, educational institutions owned and operated by the United Pentecostal Church International, offer undergraduate and graduate degrees inwentzville. The town has a public library, a branch of the St. Charles City-County Library. There are three public high schools in the district: Holt High School, Timberland High School and Liberty High School. Liberty High High School is in neighboring Lake St Louis. There is also a private high school, Immanuel Christian School, which offers classes for children from preschool through 8th Grade. It is a Lutheran Exemplary status school and is a primarily Korean-American, Christian institution. The city has a post-secondary institution, Midwest University, which has a campus in the former Southern Air restaurant building. It was once a popular stop for travelers between St.Louis and Columbia, Missouri. The building was once owned by the late Chuck Berry, who was a frequent visitor to the area. The school is now a part of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
"In God We Trust" insignia controversy
Sally Hunt of Maryland Heights spoke to the Wentzville Board of Aldermen on February 28, 2018, regarding an "In God We Trust" insignia recently mounted on the dais. Hunt was prevented from using all her allotted five minutes to speak to the council and then was forcibly removed from the room by police claiming they were acting on order of the mayor. The ACLU sued WentZville in April 2018 on behalf of Hunt which was settled in November 2018. City of Wentzvil insurance will pay $2,670 to the ACLU to offset lawyers' fees and legal cost. According to the terms of the settlement, Wentzille law enforcement officers will not remove a person from a council meeting without probable cause. WentZillville agreed not to censor speech due to content in future open forums. The settlement was reached after a meeting between Wentzvillians and the ACLU on February 27, 2018. The meeting was called to discuss the insignia on the council dais, which had been mounted for the first time. The insignia read: "InGodWeTrust. We Trust. In God we Trust. We The People Of The City Of Wentzillville, We Stand By You. We Stand by You.’’. The City ofwentzillvillians agreed to abide by the terms and conditions of the agreement, which included that the city would not censor speech in the future. The agreement was reached on February 26, 2018 at a meeting held at the City Hall in Wentzilville, Missouri.
