St. Peters is a city in St. Charles County, Missouri, United States. The 2010 census showed the city's population to be 52,575, tied for 10th place in Missouri with Blue Springs. In 2008, St. Peters was named the 60th best place to live by Money magazine, putting it at the top in the state of Missouri. The city also hosts the county's largest shopping center, Mid Rivers Mall. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area that would become St Peters was inhabited by Mississippian mound builders. The remains of a village were uncovered during the construction of I-70 in 1954 and a street near the site was later named Mound Drive after the mounds built by the villagers. In 1895, music was a binding factor for the area, with a well-known cornet band. During flooding in the region, the National Weather Service reported 12.3 inches (310 mm) of rainfall in St Peters for July 26, 2022, considered an unofficial record. St.Peters celebrated its 50th year as a town in 2009, and marked its 100th anniversary as a city as of 2010. It was named for a Jesuit mission established there in 1910. It has a total area of 22.37 square miles (57.94 km²) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a population density of 2,350.2 inhabitants per square mile (907.4/km²) In 2000, there were 51,381 people, and 13,435 people in the city.
History
Saint Peters is the primary city name, but also Cottleville, O Fallon are acceptable city names or spellings, St Peters on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Saint Peters. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area that would become St. Peters was inhabited by Mississippian mound builders. The remains of a village were uncovered during the construction of I-70 in 1954 and a street near the site was later named Mound Drive after the mounds built by the villagers. The city continued its rapid growth through the 1980s and by 1990 had a population of 40,660. The population increased to an estimated 52,575 as of 2010. During flooding in the region, the National Weather Service reported 12.3 inches (310 mm) of rainfall for July 26, 2022, considered an unofficial record. St.Peters celebrated its 50th year as a city in 2009, and marked its 100thyear as a town in 2010. The town was named for a Jesuit mission established there. It was a small farming town for most of the 20th century, until it became a more suburban community in the 1950s and 1960s. It has become a city since 1959, having become a town in 1910 and a city in 1959. It became a town again in 1910, and aCity in 1959, and became a city again in 2009. In 2010, the city celebrated its 100 years as a Town. It is the second largest city in the state, after St. Louis, with an estimated population of more than 100,000. It also has the third largest population of any U.S. city, behind only New York City and Los Angeles.
Geography
St. Peters is located at 38°4644N 90°3611W (38.778893, -90.603131). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.37 square miles (57.94 km²), all land. The city is home to the St. Peters High School, which was founded in 1872. The school was the first in the state to be chartered in 1876. The town has a population of 1,856. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. The river is a tributary of the Little Mississippi River. It was named after the town's founder, St. Peter, who was born in the area in 1874. The St. Louis River flows through the city, which is also known as the "Little Mississippi River" and was named for the town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, which lies on the river's eastern edge. It has an elevation of 38.4 miles (90.6 kilometers) and is located near the junction of two rivers, the Mississippi and the Missouri Greater Swiss rivers. The St. Phenomenon of St. Peter is named after a former resident of the town, who is credited with helping to save the town from being submerged in the Great Lakes. The current mayor of St Peters is the son of a former mayor, who also served as mayor in the early 1900s.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 52,575 people, 20,861 households, and 14,244 families residing in the city. There were 21,717 housing units at an average density of 970.8 per square mile (374.8/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 94.25% White, 2.80% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.23% Asian,0.01% Pacific Islander, and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population. The city's median income was $57,898, and the median income for a family was $65,123. About 2.6% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of people age 65 or over were living below the poverty line. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.05. The median age was 38.8 years, with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 33.5%, 21.3% from 25 to 44, and 7.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The gender ratio was 48.2% male and 51.8%. The city has a population density of 2,350.2 inhabitants per squaremile (907.4/km 2) and a population growth rate of 1.7% per year.
Government
Citizens elect a mayor and eight aldermen (two for each of four wards) to govern the city. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen appoint individuals to the positions of City Collector, City Clerk, and City Treasurer. A Municipal Judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit, also known as the St. Peters Municipal Court, has a four-year term. City elections are held in April, per Missouri law for elected officials. Propositions may be voted upon at these elections, or others held in February, August or November. A City Administrator also works for the Mayor and board of alders. The Board of Alders meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, except the months of June, July, November and December when one meeting is held each month on a date scheduled with the Mayor. The mayor is Len Pagano, and the board members are Joyce Townsend, Rocky Reitmeyer, Judy Bateman, Gregg Sartorius, Terri Violet, Melissa Reimer, Nick Trupiano and Patrick Barclay. The city has a population of 2,000, with the majority of residents living in the central part of the city, which is in the north. The average income is about $50,000. The median household income is around $60,000 and the city has an average household income of about $70,500. The minimum wage is $30,000; the city's average household height is about 5 feet, 7 inches.
Education
Three public high schools are within St. Peters city limits: Fort Zumwalt South High School with an enrollment of 1,700 students, Francis Howell North High School (2,100 students) which opened in 2007. Other public schools in the city include Fairmount, Hawthorn, Lewis & Clark, Mid Rivers, Progress South, St Peters, and Warren Elementary Schools. The city limits also contain the private Lutheran High School of St Charles County. Some high school students attend schools in surrounding communities such as Francis Howell Central High School in neighboring Cottleville, and Fort Zummalt West High Schools in O'Fallon. Some students from the city also attend private schools such as St. Charles High School and St Charles Christian School in St Charles, Missouri. There are no high schools or middle schools within the city limits of St. Peter's, but there are a number of private high schools in nearby towns and counties. There is no public high school or middle school in the town of Warren, Missouri, but the city does have one private high school, St Charles Catholic High School, which is located in Warren. The town of Fairmount has one high school and one middle school, Fairmount High School. It is also home to Fairmount Elementary School and Fairmount Middle School, as well as Fairmount and Hawthorn Middle Schools. St Peters has one public elementary school, Progress North, and two public middle schools, Progress West and Progress South. It also has one private elementary school called Fairmount School.
Civic facilities
St. Peters is home to Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, the county's second busiest after St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles. The Rec-Plex hosted the 2004 Olympic Diving Trials and is recognized as one of the USA's premier diving facilities. The city's "Recycle City" opened in April 1997 and has the ability to recycle various types of material which is then sold to companies that use recycled goods in products. In 2007, Recycle City recycled 12,522,767 pounds of material. The Spencer Road Branch library, the largest and busiest within the St.Charles City-County Library District, is in St Peters. It is located on Spencer Road and is open seven days a week. The library is open from 9am to 5pm and has a collection of more than 2,000 books. It also has a branch of the National Library of Medicine, which is open to the public on the second floor of St. Peter's City Hall. It has a satellite location of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, which has 175 rooms and is located in the same building as the hospital. The hospital is also home to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the third floor of the city's municipal building. It was the site of the U.S. Open Diving Championships in 2004. The St Peters Rec- Plex is a 236,000 sq ft (21,900 m2) family recreation and athletic training complex, is situated next to St Peters City Hall, and is known for its high-tech facilities.
Parks and recreation
St. Peters has the most extensive park system in St. Charles County. The city has over 1,000 acres (4,000,000 m2) of parks and trails. Outdoor amenities include: recreation trails, playgrounds, picnic shelters and pavilions, athletic fields, fishing ponds, and landscape areas. St. Peters' newest park, having opened on May 19, 2011, is Old Town Park, which is more than 100 years old and is home to the annual St Peters Olde Tyme Picnic. The park currently only consists of 90 acres while another park is currently under construction. Shady Springs Park also has a half-mile fitness trail through a wooded service area on the north side of the park. The town's largest park is the St. Peter's Civic Center, which has a ball diamond, basketball court, two tennis courts, a playground, picnic tables, a barbecue grill and multipurpose trails. The smallest park is Oak Creek, a 2.5-acre park with a playground and several picnic tables in a two-acre setting. It is the smallest neighborhood park in the St Peters park system. The largest city park is St. Louis, with a park that includes a baseball diamond, a football field, a picnic pavilion, a BMX track, and a playground. It also features a grass outdoor amphitheater for music and the performing arts. It has a 140-acre recreational lake with fishing and boating, including a canoe channel, family picnic areas, park pavilion, and walking trails surrounding the lake.
