Picayune is the largest city in Pearl River County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,878 at the 2010 census. The city is located approximately 45 miles (72 km) from New Orleans, Hattiesburg, and GulfportBiloxi. The Stennis Space Center is 10 miles (16 km) away. The word "picayune" was the name of a Spanish coin, worth half a real. Its name derives from the French "picaillon", which is itself from the Provençal "picaioun" Picayune was incorporated in 1904, and was named by Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson in 1884. The local post office contained a mural, subsequently covered over, Lumber Region of Mississippi, painted by Donald H. Robertson in 1940. Federally commissioned murals were produced from 1934 to 1943 in the U.S. through the Section of Painting and Sculpture. of the Treasury Department. The bulk of the Katrina damage was caused by high winds, as the eye wall passed over the city. This caused many who relocated from the New Orleans area and from the Mississippi Gulf Coast who were seeking a safer home site with easy commuting to those areas. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 square miles (31 km²), of which 11.7 square miles of land (31km²) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.10 km²) (7.34%) is water. In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 or older.

History

The word "picayune" was the name of a Spanish coin, worth half a real. Its name derives from the French "picaillon", which is itself from the Provençal "picaioun" Picayune was incorporated in 1904, and was named by Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson in 1884. The local post office contained a mural, subsequently covered over, Lumber Region of Mississippi, painted by Donald H. Robertson in 1940. Federally commissioned murals were produced from 1934 to 1943 in the United States through the Section of Painting and Sculpture of the Treasury Department. The city was the temporary home for many who relocated from the New Orleans area and from the Mississippi Gulf Coast who were seeking a safer home site with easy commuting to those areas. The bulk of the Katrina damage was caused by high winds, as the eye wall passed over the city. This resulted in widespread roof, window, and fence damage. The wind also caused hundreds, if not thousands, of downed trees and power outages of up to a few weeks. It was not as severe as in other nearby cities, but it caused many people to lose their homes and businesses for a period of time. It is now a suburb of New Orleans, with a population of around 3,000. The town is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city, and is a popular tourist destination for New Orleans residents and visitors to the Gulf of Mexico.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.8 square miles (31 km²) Picayune is a part of the New OrleansMetairieHammond combined statistical area. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which flows through the city. It is the only city in the state of Louisiana to be named after a river or river system. It has a population of 2,816. The town is located in the East Bank of the Redemptorist River, a tributary of the Vermilion River. The river runs through the center of the city, and is known as the "Redemptorists River" It is also known as "The Redemptorian River" because of its red color. It was named after the Reductor River, an early settler of the area. It also has a name for a river that once ran through the town. The name "Picayune" is derived from the French word for "river" or "river". The city's name is also derived from "picayune", which means "redoubt" in French, and means "place of refuge" in the French language. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city's population is 2,716. There is 0.04 square miles of land, or 0.10 km², of which 0.08 square miles is water. The total area is 11.9 square miles, or 31 km².

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 11,885 people, 4,457 households, and 2,951 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 62.02% White, 35.92% African American, 0.38% Native American,0.30% Asian, 1.15% from two or more races, and 0.05% Pacific Islander. The city's population was spread out, with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 23.0%, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06. The median income was $26,958, and the median income for a family was $33,260. About 18.9% of families and 20.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 17.6% ofThose age 65 or over. The per capita income for the city is $15,798. It is the only city in the state with a population of more than 10,000 in the 2000 United States census. It has a population density of 895.6 people per square mile (345.9/km²) and a population growth rate of 3.7% from 2000 to 2010.

Education

Picayune is served by the Picayune School District. The Center of Alternate Education is also located in the city. All of Pearl River County is in the service area of the Pearl River Community College. The school's mascot is the Maroon Tide and the school's colors are blue and white. The high school is named after the local high school. The elementary schools are called Nicholson and Roseland Park. The middle school is called South Side Elementary and the elementary school is West Side Elementary. The center of alternate education is located at the center of the city in the town of Picayunes. The community college is called Pearl River College and is based in the community of Piedmont, Louisiana. The college is located in Piedmond, Louisiana and serves the city of Peculier, Louisiana, as well as the surrounding counties. The district's high school and junior high schools are named after Picayunas Memorial High School and Picayuna Junior High School, respectively. The junior high school has a mascot called the "Junior Tide" The elementary school's name is "Roseland Park Elementary" and the Elementary School is "West Side Elementary" It is also known as "Nicholson Elementary" for its location in the middle of the town. The Elementary School's name means "the first school" or "the oldest school" in the district. It is the only elementary school in the area. It was built in the early 1900s and is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town's nickname is "The Little River".

Government

The United States Postal Service operates the Picayune Post Office. There is a mural made by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) but subsequent renovations covered up the mural with new paint. The post office is located on the corner of Main Street and Main Street. It is located in a building that was built in the 1930s by the U.S. Postal Service. The Post Office is open seven days a week, seven hours a day, seven days per week.

Infrastructure

Amtrak's Crescent train connects Picayune with the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham, and New Orleans. Mississippi Highway 43 is the main connection to and from the east, connecting to Interstate 10 near Kiln, MS. The Margaret Reed Crosby Memorial Library is the headquarters of the Pearl River County Library System.Picayune Municipal Airport has a 5,000 ft (1,500 m) runway and is a popular destination for private fixed-wing and rotary aircraft visiting the New Orleans area. Rental car, taxi and limousine services are available at the airport. The Amtrak station is situated at 100 South U.S. Route 11. There is tri-weekly service in each direction. The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico from the Louisiana coast. It is located near the junction of Interstate 59 and Interstate 10, which connects to New Orleans, LA, to the south and Hattiesburg, MS, Meridian, and Birmingham, AL to the north. It has a population of 2,000 people (as of the 2010 census) and is home to a public high school with grades K-12. It also has a public library with grades 1-12, with grades 9-12 available for grades 7-12 and 13-14. The town has a post office with a ZIP code of 7054, which is located in the city's central business district.

The third shuttle, the Space Shuttle Enterprise, arrived on July 14, 1989, at 6:01 a.M.E.T. for a mission to the International Space Station. The final shuttle mission was scheduled for July 17, 1990, leaving the station at 8:05 a.Sections of the space station are located in Hawaii, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The last shuttle mission left the station on July 20, 1991, and returned to the United States on July 21, 1991. The station's final mission was on July 22, 1992, and it was scheduled to land at the Kennedy Space Center.
