Fulton was established in 1837 as a county seat for the newly created Itawamba County. It is named for Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat. The population was 3,961 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Tupelo Micropolitan Statistical Area. Fulton has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km²) of which 8.5 square miles are land and 0.23 sq miles (0.6km²), or 2.46%, are water. History

Fulton is located west of the center of Itawamba County at 34°1558N 88°245W (34.266110, -88.401358). It is bordered to the west by the TennesseeTombigbee Waterway. I-22 leads west 19 miles (31 km) to Tupelo and east 25 miles (40km) to Hamilton, Alabama. Mississippi Highway 25 passes through the southeastern part of Fulton, leading south 14 miles (23 km) to Smithville and north 26 miles (42 km) to Belmont. The city has a population of 1,788. It is located on the banks of the Tennessee River, which runs through the city. The Tennessee River is a tributary of the Cumberland River. It runs through Fulton and is also known as the "Cumberland River Delta" and the "Tennessee River Valley" It is the only city in the state to be on the Alabama/Mississippi border. Fulton is located near the junction of the Mississippi River and the Alabama-Tennessee state line, which is about 20 miles (32 km) south of the city's center. The town is also on the Tennessee-Alabama state line and is about 30 miles (50 km) from the Alabama state line.
