Owatonna was first settled in 1853 around the Straight River. It was platted in September 1855, incorporated as a town on August 9, 1858, and as a city on February 23, 1865. It is the county seat of Steele County. Owatonna is home to the Steele County Fairgrounds, which hosts the Steele. County Free Fair in August.Interstate 35 and U.S. Highways 14, and 218 are three of the main routes in the city. In July 2008, a Raytheon Hawker 800 corporate jet crashed near Owatona, resulting in eight deaths. On October 31, 2010, Owl City's Adam Young held a hometown concert in the Ow atonna Senior High School gym. On November 3, 2015, the OwAtonna Public School District passed a bond referendum to fund school facilities improvements focusing on deferred maintenance, safety, and Elementary school crowding. All facility and projects were completed by September 2018. In 1962, the Minnesota Historical Society permanently leased part of the southeast section of the fairgrounds to begin a pioneer village, Yesteryear, which has grown in the years since. Established in 1949, it has become one of the largest and most prestigious state historical societies in the United States. The State of Minnesota created Kaplan's Wood State Park, which was later transferred to the City of Owatana. The Kaplan's Woods Parkway contains over 6 miles (10 km) of hiking and cross country skiing trails. The parkway includes Lake Kohlmier, a 35-acre (14 ha) lake. In 1945, the orphanage closed and in 1947 the State Public School was officially abolished and all its lands, buildings, property, and funds were transferred. In 1974, the City purchased the compound for its office space.

History

Owatonna was first settled in 1853 around the Straight River. It was platted in September 1855, incorporated as a town on August 9, 1858, and as a city on February 23, 1865. In 1856, Josef Karel Kaplan emigrated from the village of Dlouhá Tebová, southeast of Prague, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), and selected a quarter section [160 acres (65 ha)] of land near the town of Owatonna. The State of Minnesota created Kaplan's Wood State Park, which was later transferred to the City of Ow atonna. In July 2008, a Raytheon Hawker 800 corporate jet crashed near Owatona, resulting in eight deaths. On October 31, 2010, Owl City's Adam Young held a hometown concert in the OwAtonna Senior High School gym. The Steele County Historical Society "preserves Steele County's past, shares the county's stories, and connects people with history in meaningful ways, for today and for tomorrow" In 1962, the Society permanently leased part of the southeast section of the fairgrounds to begin a pioneer village. The Village of Yesteryear has grown in the years since, through the addition of historic structures, as well as a museum built on the site of the original fairgrounds. The community was named after the Straight river, which in the Dakota language is Wakpá Owóthana. A popular, but apocryphal, story is that the town is named after "Princess Owatanna", the daughter of local Native American Chief Wadena who was supposedly healed by a nearby spring.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 14.62 square miles (37.87 km²) The oldest part of the city (including the downtown area) is on a low-lying area on the eastern bank of the Straight River. The city has grown in all directions, and now lies on both sides of the river, as well as above the ridge north of Maple Creek.Record rainfall events from September 22 to 24, 2010, caused flooding of Straight River and Maple Creek in and near Owatonna, with developments in the floodplains of both streams completely inundated. It is located in the Upper Midwest region of the U.S. and is home to the University of Wisconsin-Owatonna. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located near the city's downtown area, and is open to the public for tours and events. It also has a national park, which is used by local athletes for training and competition. The town is located on the shores of the Clearwater River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. It was the site of the Battle of Clearwater, which took place in 1851. The Clearwater Massacre, which occurred in 1852, took place on the banks of theClearwater River and claimed the lives of 19 people. It has been the scene of numerous other major crimes, including murder, rape, and arson. The area was once known as the "Red River Valley" because of the Red River, which runs through the city.

As of the census of 2010, 25,599 people, 10,068 households, and 6,737 families resided in the city. Economy

Owatonna is an economic center of Southern Minnesota, with diverse industries. Federated Insurance is the largest employer, with 1,521 employees, followed by an expanding Viracon. Other large employers in the community are Bosch, Jostens, Gopher Sport, Brunswick Corporation (Cybex International), Daikin Industries, Owatonna Public Utilities, AmesburyTruth, ISD 761, Wenger Corporation, Ow atonna Clinic - Mayo Health System, and Owatona Hospital - Allina Hospitals & Clinics. The community is home to the Mayo Clinic, which is part of the Allina Health System. It is also the home of the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, and Minnesota Golden Gophers football teams. The town has a population of 3,000, with a population growth rate of 1.7% per year. The city is located on the Minnesota River, which flows into the Mississippi River. The river is a major source of water supply for the community. It also provides a source of drinking water, electricity, and natural gas. It has a large number of businesses, including a large insurance company, Viracon, which has 1,434 employees. The area is also home to a number of health care facilities, including Allina Hospital and Mayo Clinic. The population is 3,200. The economy is based on a combination of agriculture, manufacturing, and non-profit businesses. The largest employer is Federated insurance, with more than 1,500 employees.

Arts and culture

In 1974, the City of Owatonna purchased the campus of the former Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children. The site was renamed West Hills, and now serves as an administrative center for the City. The National Farmer's Bank is a national landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and functions as a branch of Wells Fargo Bank. The State School Museum is at West Hills on the grounds of the Former Minnesota State School fordependent andneglected Children, which was in operation from 1886 until 1945. The ongoing practical joke Pesky Pants took place between 1965 and 1989 in Owatona. The City's Arts Center is located in the historic National Farmers Bank building, which is still in pristine condition and features gold leaf arches, stained-glass windows, and nouveau Baroque art designs. It is a National Register-listed building and serves as a bank branch for Wells Fargo. It was designed by Louis Sullivan in 1908 and is one of the premier examples of the Prairie School of architecture in America. It has been named a National Historic Landmark by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Park Service. It also serves as the home of the National Museum of American History and Culture, which has a permanent exhibition of photographs of the U.S. from the time of the First World War to the early 20th century. It's also home to the Minnesota State Museum of History and Art, which dates back to the 18th century and is located on the site of the State School.

Sports

Steele County Blades is a junior hockey team that plays at Four Seasons Center. The Blades are a member of the MN Junior Hockey League. Although having a similar name and logo, this team is unrelated to the former Southern Minnesota Express, which relocated to Michigan to become the Motor City Machine. The Express began play in the 2008-2009 season, and completed its final season in March 2011. The team is based in Steele County, Minnesota, and plays in the MN JHL. They play their home games at the Four Seasons Center, which is located in the town of Steele County. They are currently playing in the JHL's second division, the Minnesota Junior Baskets. They have won two league titles, the most recent in 2009-10. They also won the league title in 2010-11. They lost the league championship in 2011-12, the first time they had done so in the league's history. They won the title in 2007-08, the team's first season in the NHL's third division, and the year before that in 2006-07. They were the first team to win back-to-back league titles in the JHL's third and fourth seasons. The last time they won a league title was in 2008-09, when they won the championship in their fourth season. This is their first successive year in the league, and they have won three league titles since then. They currently have a record of 13 wins and one loss.

Owatonna is governed by a mayor and city council. The city is in Minnesota's 24th Senate District, represented by John Jasinski, a Republican. Owatonna is in House District 24A, represented in the state legislature by State Representative John Petersburg, aRepublican. The mayor is Thomas Kuntz, and the city council is made up of six members. The council is divided into five wards. The first ward is led by Nathan Dotson. The second ward is headed by Greg Schultz, the third by Dave Burbank, the fourth by Kevin Raney and the fifth by Brent Svenby. It is located in Steele, Rice and Waseca and Dodge counties in the southeastern part of the state. It's in the 1st congressional district and in the 24th state Senate district, both of which are represented by Republicans. It has a population of about 2,000 people, mostly residents of Steele and Rice counties, and about 1,000 residents of Dodge County. It was founded in 1883. It became a city in 1894. It received its first water supply in 1891. It got its first sewage treatment system in 1892. It had its first paved road in 1884. It entered the Minnesota River in 1881. It passed through a tunnel in 1885. It went through a canal in 1887. It passes through a river in 1888. It goes through a dam in 1882. It runs through a ravine in 1879.

Education

Owatonna is home to the Owatonna Art Education Project. Public education is provided by Independent School District No. 761. Public schools include Lincoln Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Washington Elementary, and Wilson Elementary. Private schools include St. Marys Catholic School, Marian Catholic High School, Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, and Willow Creek Intermediate School. Riverland Community College is a community college in Owatana, Minnesota. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located in the northern part of the state, near the town of Wabasha. The city is located on the shores of Lake Winnebago, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River. It has an elevation of about 1,200 feet (400 meters) above sea level.
