Eden Prairie

Eden Prairie is a city 12 miles (19 km) southwest of downtown Minneapolis in Hennepin County and the 16th-largest city in the State of Minnesota, United States. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 64,198. The community was designed as a mixed-income city model, and is home to 7,213 commercial firms, including the headquarters of SuperValu, C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Winnebago Industries, Lifetouch Inc., SABIS, and MTS Systems Corporation. It contains the Eden Prairie Center mall and is the hub of SouthWest Transit, providing public transportation to three adjacent suburbs. The television stations KMSP and WFTC are based in Eden Prairie. The area features numerous municipal and regional parks, conservation areas, multi-purpose trails, and recreational facilities. There are more than 170 miles (270 km) of multi-use trails, 2,250 acres (9 km²) of parks, and 1,300 acres (5 km² of open space. The city has been featured as one of Money magazine's "Best Places to Live" in America several times since 2006. It earned first place in the 2010 survey and second place in 2016. In 1853, John H. McKenzie and Minnesota Territory secretary Alexander Wilkins platted the town of HennEPin along the Minnesota River in what is now southeastern Eden Prairie, but the town soon vanished from maps. The land was part of the Great Dakota Nation, but when the Ojibwe arrived from the Great Lakes region, the tribes began to clash over the land.

History

Eden Prairie was platted in 1853 by John H. McKenzie and Alexander Wilkins. The town of Hennepin was soon eclipsed by other towns in the region. Eden Prairie became a village in 1962 and a statutory city in 1974. Flying Cloud Airport was the first sign of big development in 1946. In the mid-1970s, the community gained a higher profile with the addition of Interstate Highway 494 and the Eden Prairie Center mall. The city was originally named "Eden" by one Mrs. Ellet, who chose the name because of her admiration of the "beautiful prairie" that occupies the southern part of town. In 1880, John Cummins, an Irish-born immigrant, built what is now known as the "Cummins-Phipps-Grill House" with his wife Mattie in 1880. He was an avid and respected horticulturist, scientist, and farmer. He used his farmland to experiment with different strains of apples and grapes to try to find one that could withstand the harsh climate in Minnesota. One of Eden Prairie's popular lakes, Staring Lake, is named for Jonas Platt Staring (1809-1894), who built the first house by the lake. He went on to be the chief of the Red Wing Dakota tribe for 15 years, leaving them and becoming Chief of the 'Little Six' band of Dakota until the uprising in 1862. He died in 1899 at age 99 at his home in Eden Prairie.

Geography

Eden Prairie is about 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Minneapolis along the northern side of the Minnesota River. The city has parks, such as Staring Lake Park and Bryant Lakes Regional Park, with trails for running and biking. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 35.19 square miles (91.14 km²) of which 32.45square miles (84.05 km²), is land and 2.74sq miles (7.10km²) is water. Its land consists of rolling hills and bluffs overlooking theMinnesota River, with zones of prairie and mixed (primarily deciduous) forests. It has a population of 2,715. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It also lies on the shores of the Red River, a tributary of the Missouri River, and the Redwood River, both of which flow through the city's eastern side. It was founded in the 17th century by German settlers, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Its name is derived from the German word "Eden", which means "hill" or "prairie" and means "land" in German. The name was adopted by the city in the late 19th century as a way to refer to the area's rolling hills. The town was named after the German city of Eden, which is located in the same region of the state.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 60,797 people, 23,930 households, and 16,517 families residing in the city. There were 25,075 housing units at an average density of 772.7 per square mile (298.3/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 81.7% White, 5.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 9.2%. Asian, 1.0% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0%. The city's median income was $54,328, and the median income for a family was $105,177. About 2.8% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.9% of those under 18 and 6.3. of those 65 or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.20. The median age was 34.6. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For each 100 females 18 and over there were 92.8 males. The city has a population density of 1,873.6 inhabitants per squaremile (723.4/ km²) and a median age of 37.6 years old. It is the most populous city in the state, with a population of 54,901 people, 20,457 households and 14,579 families.

Economy

Eden Prairie is home to more than 2,800 businesses, including many that specialize in logistics/distribution, retail and wholesale trade, health care, industrial equipment, communications, and information technology. According to the city's 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, its top employers were: video game retailer FuncoLand, which operated in over 400 locations nationwide before its acquisition and merger, was headquartered in Eden Prairie. The city's largest employer was a bank with more than 1,000 employees, according to the report. It was also home to a health care company with over 1,500 employees, and an information technology company with nearly 1,200 employees. It also had a retail store with over 300 locations, including a distribution center with over 100 in the city, and a retail/retail store with nearly 100 locations in the state, as well as a wholesale/retails store with about 50 locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. It had a manufacturing plant with over 2,000 workers, which was based in the town's downtown area. The town's top employer was an industrial equipment company, which had more than 100 employees. The largest employer in the area was a company that makes industrial equipment and communications equipment, which has more than 300 locations in and out of the state. It is based in a town that has a population of just over 3,000 people, and it is located in the northern part of the city near the U.S. border with Minnesota.

Arts and culture

In 2008, Eden Prairie raised over $400,000 from the community to build a veterans memorial. Sculptor Neil Brodin designed and constructed two bronze sculptures. Community members could purchase a place on the memorial for the names of loved ones who served in any branch of the U.S. service in any war or conflict. Minnesota-based Cold Spring Granite provided Mesabi black granite for the memorial's walls. It was constructed in Purgatory Creek Park near the intersection of Technology Drive and Prairie Center Drive. The service-to-country sculpture represents a wounded airman carried over the shoulders of a soldier in the battlefield. The world-peace sculpture depicts a woman service member touching a globe, honoring women who have served. The memorial has two components, service to country and world peace. It has been open to the public since 2008 and is expected to remain open until at least the end of the year. It is located in the town of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and is located on the edge of the city's downtown area, near the Peculier River and the University of Minnesota campus. It cost $1.5 million to build and was funded by donations from the Eden Prairie community and private donors. It will be dedicated on November 11, 2009. It features a bronze sculpture of a wounded service member and a woman touching the globe.

Sports

The 2017 USA Rink Bandy League Cannon Cup Playoffs took place at the Eden Prairie Rinks. The tournament was the first time the tournament had been held in the U.S. It was also the first tournament to be held in a state other than New Jersey. The winner of the tournament received a $1,000 cash prize. The runner-up was awarded a $2,500 cash prize and a $3,000 prize for their performance in the tournament. The final was held in New Jersey and was won by the team from the town of Eden Prairie. The team won the tournament with a score of 3-1. The other team from Eden Prairie won the championship with a record of 2-0 after a 3-0 win over the New Jersey team in the semi-finals and 3-2 victory in the final. The third and final game was played in New York City and won 2-1 by the New York team. The fourth and fifth games were played in Chicago and won 1-0 by the Chicago side. The sixth and seventh games were held in San Francisco and were won by both teams from the San Francisco area. The seventh and eighth games took place in Los Angeles and were played at the San Diego rink. The last game was the final game of the series in San Diego and won by San Diego team from San Diego. The game was also played in San Jose and won 4-2 by the Los Angeles team. It is the first game in the series to be played in a city that has been part of the Cannon Cup playoffs.

Government

Eden Prairie is in Minnesota's 3rd congressional district, represented by Dean Phillips, a Democrat. City council officials include Mayor Ron Case and council members Brad Aho, Brad Freiberg, and PG Naraynan. The department has a chief, a deputy chief, three lieutenants, 12 sergeants, 37 police officers, 13 investigative officers (Investigators), and roughly 24 support civilian staff. It has three divisions: Patrol, Investigations and Support. The Patrol Division includes SWAT and police dog elements. It was established on the first day of 1973, and employs about 60 sworn law-enforcement officers and 30 support staff. The city manager is Rick Getschow, and the mayor is Ron Case, who is also the city council's mayor and city manager of the city of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, which is in the 3rd district of the U.S., and represents Minnesota's 1st congressional district. It is located in the heart of the Red River Valley, which has a population of about 2.5 million. It's in the state of Minnesota's 2nd district, which includes the cities of Mounds View, Eden Prairie and St. Louis Park, as well as the towns of Winona, Minn., Thief River Falls and Ephrata. The police department was established in 1973, with a chief and deputy chief; it has 37 sworn officers. It employs about 30 support officers and about 24 civilian staff, including about 24 investigators. It also has a SWAT team.

Education

The first school in Eden Prairie was Anderson School, a schoolhouse near a farm. Eden Prairie operates eight K-12 schools, six elementary (PreK-5) schools (including one Spanish immersion), one middle school (6-8), and one high school (9-12) Eden Prairie High School is Minnesota's second-largest high school, with about 3,300 students. The International School of Minnesota offers a private, non-denominational, college preparatory education for students from preschool through grade 12. Hennepin Technical College (whose main campus is in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota) has an enrollment of roughly 7,000 full- and part-time students. Some students attend public schools in other school districts chosen by their families under Minnesota's open enrollment statute. The district has a record of success, with 11 Eden Prairie high school juniors scoring perfect ACT scores in 2017. There is one charter school, the Performing Institute of Minnesota Arts High School. The student body consists of 85% local residents and 15% international students. It offers non-selective admissions and year-round open enrollment. The school, founded in 1985, features daily world language education beginning in preschool, and 19 AP courses at the upper school level. It is home to one technical college campus, which offers day and night classes. It also has one private school, The International school of Minnesota, which is open to all students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It has a total enrollment of about 8,000 students.

Infrastructure

The city has its own police department. The city is located in a rural area. It is located on a hilltop and has a large amount of undeveloped land. It has a population of about 2,000 people. The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.
