Shelbyville

Shelbyville is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 14,045 at the 2010 census. The town was established in October 1792 at the first meeting of the Shelby County Court. Shelbyville is located on the western bank of Clear Creek at the confluence of Mulberry Creek and near a road between Louisville and Frankfort. The Louisville and Shelbyville Turnpike was completed in the 1830s, following a ridgeline path between the two sites dating back to the Native Americans. During the Civil War, Confederate guerillas under local sympathizer Capt.Dave Martin attacked the Shelby county Courthouse, attempting to seize its cache of muskets. The local merchant Thomas McGrath and tailor J.H. Masonheimer fought them off, killing three of Martin's men. A black man named Owen was also killed in the exchange, having been forced to hold the guerilla's horses for them. In 1864, the trustees required all white male residents over the age of 18 to serve as police guards, erecting a blockhouse at Fifth and Main in front of the courthouse. On May 10, 1865, Shelby County Home Guard and its captain Edwin Terrell found Quantrill's raiders at a barn outside Wakefield in Spencer Co. and fatally shot their leader. The city came out to cheer the men upon their return and the trustees continued paying their room and board for another month after the U.S. Army paid off Terrell.

History

On August 24, 1864, Confederate guerillas under local sympathizer Capt. Dave Martin attacked the Shelby county Courthouse, attempting to seize its cache of muskets. In response to the slaughter of 35 Union cowboys by Confederate guerrillas in Shelby County and to William Clarke Quantrill's entrance into Kentucky, Gen. John Palmer placed 30 members of Shelby County Home Guard and its captain Edwin Terrell on the federal payroll on April 1, 1865. On May 26, Terrell and his lieutenant Harry Thompson had murdered and robbed an Illinois stockman named William R. Johnson. Over the next year, the local jury could not return a verdict and Terrell was transferred to Taylorsville.

Geography

Shelbyville is located at 38°1244N 85°1333W (38.212160, -85.225847), on U.S. 60 near the center of Shelby County and north of Interstate 64. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.6 square miles (20 km²) The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. On January 19, 1994, the temperature fell to -38°C (-37°F). This reading holds the record for Kentucky's lowest daily minimum. The city has an estimated population of 2,000. It has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. It is located on the Ohio River, which is a tributary of the Kentucky River. The town has a population of 1,000, with the majority of its residents living in Shelby County. It also has a small portion of the city of Paducah, Kentucky, where the population is about 1,200. The area has an area of 0.26 km² (0.92%) with 0.1 square miles of land and 0.2 km² of water. Shelbyville has an elevation of 38.2°C (85.3°F) The city is located near the U.N. World Heritage Site, which has a UNESCO World Heritage Center status. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1945.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,085 people, 3,822 households, and 2,549 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,333.5 inhabitants per square mile (514.9/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 74.97% White, 16.35% African American, 0.33% Native American,0.53% Asian, 4.99% from other races and 2.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.51%. The city's population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there are 96.7 males. The city has a median income of $37,607, and the median income for a family was $44,481. The per capita income for the city is $17,461. About 12.5% of families and 15.5%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.0%. of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.03. It is one of the smallest cities in the state with a population of more than 10,000.

Education

Shelby County Public School District operates Martha Layne Collins High School and Shelby County High School. Shelbyville has a lending library, the Shelby County Public Library. Public education in Shelbyville is administered by Shelby County public school district. The district also operates two elementary schools and two middle schools. The high school is located in the town's downtown area. The school district operates two high schools and one middle school. The town has one elementary school and one high school. Shelbyville is known as the Saddlebred Capital of the World. The city holds an annual Shelbyville Horse Show, which is visited by many famous people including William Shatner. Shelbyville is home to American independent record label Somewherecold Records. It hosted their very first pride parade in June of 2021. It was organized by a local group, Shelby County Pride Committee.

Economy

Diageo built a $140 million distillery in Shelbyville in 2018. The distillery has 30 full-time employees. Diageo is the world's second largest spirits maker, behind only spirits giant Anheuser-Busch InBev. The company has more than 1,000 employees in the U.S. and around the world. It is based in London, England, but also has a distillery on the outskirts of Shelbyville, Kentucky. It was founded in 1875. The Distillery is one of the largest distilleries in the world, with more than 30,000 staff members. It has been open for more than 40 years. It opened its doors to the public in 2010, with the help of a private investment fund. It now has a total of 30 employees, including a handful of contractors. It's one of three distillery facilities in the state. The other two are in Louisville, Kentucky, and the other is in Knoxville, Tennessee. It will open in 2018, with plans to expand to more than 100,000 square feet in the next few years. The $140m distillery is the first of its kind in the United States, and it will be open for at least 20 years.
