Hartwell is a city in Hart County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,469 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Hart County. Hartwell is in the Piedmont region of Georgia, or the Upland South, and lies 30 miles (48 km) southeast of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at Toccoa. U.S. Route 29 passes through the center of Hartwell, leading east 7 miles (11 km) to the South Carolina border at Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River, and southwest 12 miles (19km) to Royston. Anderson, South Carolina, is 23 miles (37 km) north via US 29, and Athens, Georgia is 43 miles (69 km) south via US 51. The Hart County School District holds pre-school to grade twelve, and consists of three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an academy school. The district has 230 full-time teachers and over 3,564 students. It is located at 34°2110N 82°5552W (34.352738, -82.931161) and has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13.2 km²), of which 0.02 square miles, or 0.04 km², are water. It sits 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Lake Hartwell, which acquired its name from the city. The town was named for Revolutionary War figure Nancy Morgan Hart.

History

Hartwell was founded in 1854 as seat of the newly formed Hart County. It was incorporated as a town in 1856 and as a city in 1904. The town was named for Revolutionary War figure Nancy Morgan Hart. It is located on the banks of the Ohio River, which flows through the town. The city was named after Revolutionary War figures Nancy Morgan and Nancy Hart. In 1854, Hartwell was the seat of Hart County, which later became Hart County and later Hart County itself. In 1904, it became the city of Hartwell, which was incorporated in 1858. It has a population of 3,000 people, and in 1904 it became a city of 2,000. It also has a landfill site, which has been used as a landfill since the 1950s. It's located on a river, which runs through the city, and was once the site of the Hart County Jail, which closed in the 1960s. In 2004, the city became the home of the U.S. Air Force Base, which is still in use today as a military base. The U.N. has a consulate in the town, which opened in 1961. It is located on the Georgia-South Carolina border at Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River, on U.S. Route 29 and Georgia State Route 51. The city has a population of 1,816. It has a latitude and longitude of 34.2110 N 82.5552 W. It lies on the Atlantic Coast, and is on Georgia's Atlantic Coast and South Carolina's South Carolina coast. It was founded in 1836. It had a population in 1838. It's located on a river that flows through the center of the city, leading east 7 miles (11 km) to the South Carolina border, and southwest 12 miles (19 km), to Royston. It also has a small lake, which was named after Hartwell in the town's early history.

Education

The Hart County School District holds pre-school to grade twelve, and consists of three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an academy school. The district has 230 full-time teachers and over 3,564 students. The Hart County Public Library was begun in 1938 with rooms over Homer Herndon's drug store, then moved to the County Courthouse in 1941 until 1968 when the courthouse burned down. It was then located in the County School Board building until funds were raised for a permanent building in 1975. It is now located in a building on the grounds of Hart County High School in Hart County, Wisconsin. The school district also has a private school, Hartwell Elementary, and Hartwell Middle School. It also has an academy, Hart County Academy, and a middle and high school. It has over 2,000 students in the district, including over 1,000 under the age of 12. The public library has been in the same building since 1938, when it was moved from the County Board building to the Courthouse. It currently has a collection of more than 1,500 books, and is housed in a temporary building until it can be moved to a permanent one. The library is funded by donations from the public, as well as the Hart County Board of Education and Hart County taxpayers. It opened its doors to the public in 1938, and has been there ever since. It now has a permanent library building, which was built in 1975 and is located on the site of the former County Board Building, which is on the outskirts of the town.
