Moultrie is the county seat and largest city of Colquitt County, Georgia, United States. It is the third largest city in Southwest Georgia, behind Thomasville and Albany. It was originally known as Ochlockoney until it was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly in 1859. The city was named after Gen. William Moultrie, the Revolutionary War hero after whom Fort Moultri was named following the successful defense of Charleston, South Carolina, against the British under Peter Parker. Downtown contains the Moultie Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been styled "The Antique Capital of South Georgia" and is the home of former US Senator Saxby Chambliss. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city has a total area of 16.5 square miles (42.8 km²), of which 16.3 square miles of land and 0.5 km², or 1.15%, is water. The area is generally bounded by northeast First Avenue, southeast Second Avenue, West First Street and East Fourth Street. The district's coordinates are 31°1048N 83°4714W (31.18°N 83.787222°W / 31.18; -83.783601) and 31°1013N 83 °4714°W (31.170188, - 83.783401) The city is located between Albany to the northwest, Tifton to the northeast, Thomasville to the southwest, and Valdosta to the southeast.

Geography

Moultrie is the primary city name, but also Riverside are acceptable city names or spellings, Moultrie Municipal Airport on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Moultrie, Georgia.

History

Colquitt County became the 115th county in Georgia by an act of the Legislature on February 25, 1856. It was named after Walter Terry Colquitt, a minister, statesman and lawyer who was a military leader in the mid-1860s. In 1879, a charter was adopted and 50 acres (0.03 km²) in the center of the county was declared the county seat. The Moultrie Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 3, 1994. The district's coordinates are 31°1048N 83°4714W / 31.18°N 83.787222°W /31.18; -83.787223.                                 The county's agriculture industry thrives today. The area is generally bounded by northeast First Avenue, southeast Second Avenue, West First Street and East Fourth Street. The county was named for Gen. William Moultie, the Revolutionary War hero after whom Fort Moultri was named following the successful defense of Charleston, South Carolina, against the British under Peter Parker, an anniversary subsequently celebrated as Carolina Day. In the late 1890s, founders of naval stores started harvesting timber. They set up turpentine stills and built tram roads, allowing for the railroad to come into the territory. The Boston & Albany line, which later became the Georgia Northern Railway, was the first through town, bringing with it prosperity for the county. Practically every train brought new residents interested in supplying naval stores or working in the sawmills.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 14,638 people, 4,945 households, and 2,988 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 38.05% White, 50.2% African American, 0.33% Native American,0.37% Asian, 0,05% Pacific Islander, 2.99% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. The median income for a household in theCity was $36,193, and the medianincome for a family was $43,406. About 16.0% of families and 19.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.8% of those under age 18 and 16.1% ofThose age 65 or over. The city has a population of 14,506 people, with 6,525 housing units at an average density of 459.4 per square mile (177.4/km²) The city's population is expected to rise to 14,700 by the end of the 20th century, with the population expected to reach 14,800 by the mid-20th century. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city will have 14,000 residents by the time of the next census in 2040, up from the current 14,500. The current population estimate is 14,200, with 4,525 of those living in homes that are less than one-quarter of a mile in size.

Education

Moultrie public schools are controlled by the Colquitt County Board of Education. As of November 27, 2020, the district had more than 9,100 students and 1,351 staff. The district has ten elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high school, and one high school. The county also has a small, private Christian School, which is located at Calvary Baptist Church. PCOM South Georgia opened in August 2019, offering a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree, and added a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences in the fall of 2020. There is also a small private Christian school, ColquITT Christian Academy, located in Moultrie. The school district has a pre-school to grade twelve program for children in pre-K to 12th grade. It has a middle and high school program for students in the middle and senior high school grades. It also has an elementary and middle school pre-k to grade 12 program for kids in the mid- to high school grade range. There are no private schools in the county, but there is a small Christian school in the town of Moultriere, which has a private school for pre- and grade 12 students. It is also the home of the Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) and the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), which offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Science. The town has a high school for high school students, which opened in 2009.

Industry

Sanderson Farms opened a processing plant in 2006 that now employs over 1,000 workers, over 10 percent of the local workforce. The manufacturer of light, single-engined STOL aircraft, the Maule Air, is also located in Moultrie. The town is home to the U.S. Air Force's Moulton Air Force Base, which is located in the town's downtown area. The airport is one of the busiest in the state, with over 2,000 flights a day. It is also home to a number of military bases, including the Air Force Academy, the Air National Guard, and the National Guard Training Center. The city is also the home of the University of South Carolina's football team, which has a history of winning several national championships. The U.N. World Cup is held in the city every year, and is a major economic contributor to the area. It also has a large military base, which employs over 3,000 people, including over 1, 000 military personnel. The state's economy is based on agriculture, with the majority of its jobs coming from the Sanderson Farms plant, which opened in 2006. The local economy is also based on tourism, with more than 1,500 visitors a year coming to the town for the World Cup. The area also has the second-largest economy in the United States, after the state of South Dakota. It has a population of over 1.5 million people, and has a long history of economic growth, especially in the late 1800s.

Telecommunications

There are three radio channels and three television stations located in Moultrie. The radio stations are WMTM, WWGW, WSWG and CW44. The television stations are CBS, My Network and My Network2. The TV stations are CW44 and MyNetwork2.com. The stations are also available on satellite radio, satellite television, and satellite radio transmitters in the U.S. and Canada. They are located in the town of Moultries, South Carolina, and have a total of three radio stations. The station frequencies are: WMTM-1300 AM, WWGW-LP 102.5 FM, and WSWG-93.9 FM, and CW44-LP 102.5 FM, as well as the TV stations WSWM, CW44, and My network TV, wSWG2,  and WWG-2-LP. They all broadcast on the same frequency, 1300 AM,  WWGW LP, 102 5 FM and  WWSWG LP 101.5FM. They also broadcast on satellite TV, which broadcasts on the following channels: CW 44, CW 2, My Network TV, and CW 2-2. They broadcast on these stations in the following translators: WWSWG, CW 44, and WWSWM-1-1, WMWG-1.5, and WMWM-3-3.

Transportation

Moultrie is served by US 319, which connects to Interstate 75 and Interstate 10. State Road 37 and State Road 111 also run through Moultrie. Moultie has two public airports used primarily for general aviation, Moultries Municipal Airport and Spence Airport. The town is also home to the University of South Carolina's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is located in the town's downtown area. The city has a population of 2,000. The population of the town is 2,100, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Moultriere. The community has a history of being involved in sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and other sports. The local high school has a football team, which has won several state championships. The high school also has a track and field team, the South Carolina Gamecocks, which won the state championship in 2008. The football team also won the national championship in 2010. The school's baseball team has won two state championships, in 2008 and 2010. It also has two state championship trophies, in 2007 and 2010, for football and 2010 for baseball. The village has one of the nation's largest black populations, with more than 1,000 people living in and around the town. Moultrie is home to several sites on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Colquitt County, Georgia. The town is also home to the U.S. Civil War-era town of Moultrie. Reed Bingham State Park offers camping, hiking, fishing, birding, and boating on a 375 acre lake. Wildlife includes bald eagles, alligators, and gopher tortoises. Colquitt County Arts Center is home to permanent collections, theatre groups, concerts, art education, and the Fall Quilt Exhibition. Tom White Linear Park is a 7.5 mile "Rails to Trails" project, for walkers and cycle enthusiasts. There is a Genealogy Library and a Museum of ColquITT County History. There are also trails for cyclists, walkers, and runners to explore. The county has a number of parks and trails for families to enjoy, including a trail system that runs through the center of the county. The town has a history museum, a library, and a quilt exhibition.
