Yorba Linda is a suburban city in northeastern Orange County, California, United States, approximately 37 miles (60 km) southeast of Downtown Los Angeles. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and had a population of 68,336 at the 2020 census. The city is known for its connection to Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States. His birthplace is a National Historic Landmark, and his presidential library and museum are also located in the city. The name is made up of two parts: Yorba, after a Californio ranchero who historically owned the area; and Linda, Spanish for beautiful. It was created 1908 by the Janss Investment Company, which first called the area Yorba Linda, and proceeded to subdivide the land and sell it for agriculture and manufacturing. In 1910, the first of many lemon and orange groves were planted; at the time, the population was still less than 50. In 1913, Richard Nixon was born in Yorbainda; a chamber of commerce was set up, a library opened up, and avocado trees were planted. A year later, a separate district was established for the library system, and the Susanna Bixby Ranch house was constructed. The first street was paved in 1917, and in 1929, the city's citrus association began publication. It has since become an online section of the Register of the OC, and a microfilm library is available at various city buildings free and delivered to every household.
Etymology
The name Yorba Linda is made up of two parts: Yorba, after Don Bernardo Yorba and Linda, Spanish for beautiful. The name was created 1908 by the Janss Investment Company. It was created to honor a Californio ranchero who historically owned the area. It is now the name of a city in California, Los Angeles, California. The city's name is also used in the film "Yorba Linda" and the TV series "Yurba Linda," which is based on the movie "YORBA LYNDON" The name is derived from the Spanish word "yorba" which means beautiful, and "linda" which is Spanish for pretty. It means beautiful in Spanish, which is the same as "beautiful" or "lucky" in English. The town's name means beautiful because it is located in the middle of a beautiful valley. It also means beautiful or beautiful because of its location in the heart of the Los Angeles basin. The word "lily" means "beauty" in Spanish and means "lively" or "beautiful in English, which means "pretty" or "lovely" The town is named after a man who owned the land in the early 1900s. He was known as "Don Bernardo" and lived in the area in the 1930s and 1940s. His descendants, the Yorba-Yorbans, still live in the town.
History
The area is the home of the Tongva, Luiseño, and Juaneño tribal nations, who were there "as early as 4,000 years ago" Spanish colonization between 1769 and 1840 brought "disease, invasive species, and livestock" into the area. In 1910, the first of many lemon and orange groves were planted. In 1913, Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, the chamber of commerce was set up, a library opened as part of the school, and avocado trees were first planted. The population exceeded 300 for the first time prior to 1920. In 1929, the citrus association's packing house was burned down, as it was made of wood. In 1943, "approximately seventy thousand braceros were transported to Orange County," used by employers to live in temporary housing projects referred to as "camps," which were policed by local deputies. The townspeople "refused to allow the housing of bracos in their town," forcing the nearby town of Placentia to segregate them within the Mexican colonia. The city was named after Bernardo Yorba (after whom the city would later be named), who was granted the 13,328-acre (53.94 km²) Rancho Cañón de Santa Ana by Mexican governor José Figueroa in 1834. A portion of the city's land is still owned and developed by descendants of Samuel Kraemer, who acquired it through his marriage to Angelina Yorba, the great-granddaughter of Bernardo.
